With languorous poetry (think 1970s-era Dylan) delivered in a passionate, earthy voice distinctly redolent of Richie Havens, Ben Harper earned immediate attention for his genuine, and often vigorous, brand of bluesy folk rock. He opens his 1995 debut, FIGHT FOR YOUR MIND, in socially conscious mode with the Odetta-esque "Oppression" and the stirring clarion call of the brilliant first single, "Ground on Down." However, Harper swiftly reveals a talent for the soft, somber, introspective love song (a la Tim Hardin) on tracks like "Another Lonely Day." Harper arcs the record towards a spiritual finale, and a stirring one; the surprisingly lush (orchestral even) one-two punch of "Power of the Gospel" and "God Fearing Man" echoes the revival attitude of the earliest days of blues and folk.

Unknown Contributor Role: Ben Harper.Entertainment Weekly (8/11/95, p.53) - "...Harper is rootsy and raw on his upbeat material. And when he slows down for a ballad, he displays a gift for subtle rhythms and intimate, whispered vocalizing that speaks volumes." - Rating: B+ Q (8/95, p.123) - 3 Stars - Good - "...colours all his...themes--love, politics and religion--with unsettling guitar tones which range from suave discords to sheer noise. Harper's vocals being an impatient murmur, it's often as if Nina Simone's band had been joined by Neil Young on ARC-WELD. He's deep, powerful and original..." Vibe (12/95-1/96, p.142) - "...treks down the highway of social injustice, aiming to cast out the world's problems while ushering in sensitivity and understanding....merge[s] the rage of the '60s with the frustrations of the '90s. A hybrid blessed by tradition, Harper's sound has nothing to do with retroactivity..." Option (1-2/96, p.97) - "...Harper is a genuinely gifted young singer/songwriter/guitarist with serious ambitions in folk, blues, gospel and rock'n'roll..." Ben Harper Fight For Your Mind Songs Fight For Your Mind Music Fight For Your Mind Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) big expectations Ben Harper appears as a serious man and wants to be treated serious. He sings about most important things. Music is special because must underline lyrics. Ben Harper chooses a hard way and he is a winner. I treat him serious too. His texts does not cover the music which is also worthy. Unfortunately, it is not easy to propagate wisdom. It is acceptable on one CD but not by years. Be careful, Ben. Refreshingly Original A very well recorded, diverse collection of great tracks. Beautiful guitar work on 'Ground on Down', (which sounds wonderful on the car stereo), and great chill-out numbers in particular 'Please Me Like You Want To' & 'Excuse Me Mr'. As a leap of faith in Mr.Harper this intial purchase has left my ears hungry for more of his work. Submitted by Jules (China) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I'm a new convert!! I have been associated with music since my early teens, both playing and listening. I was turned on about a year back to Wide Spread Panic, String Cheese incident, Jack Johnson, and last but not least Ben Harper. I was always a die hard fan of Emerson, Lake, and Plamer along with the likes of YES and further more RUSH. After listening to a disk of a friends I lust for the sounds thus far from "jambands". I just downlaoded the latest of Jack and Bens' work and listen to it daily. I love to listen before my local gig here in town. It mellows me for the night. | | Ian Bargh Only Trust Your Heart CD (2000)
Fight For Your Mind
$10.05 At times tenderly romantic, at other times introspective, but always assertive, Scottish-born, now-Canadian-resident pianist Ian Bargh presents a program of eleven tunes made up of a Bargh original and Tin Pan Alley products, including a couple of rarely recorded tunes. Bargh has been on the Canadian jazz scene for years, but has spent little time in the studio. Recorded in 1994, this is his only album as a leader. Yet he has appeared with Harry "Sweets" Edison, Zoot Sims, and Warren Vache among others. Bargh has also been featured at the prestigious Bern International Jazz Festival joining an imposing roster of jazz pianists including Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, and Chick Corea, who have been featured there.
This session is one of contrasts where Bargh retains the listener's attention by avoiding routine tempos and musical idioms. With this stylistic bent, Bargh gives his audience its money's worth by using all of the piano. "Laura" gets an unusually ...
