Old enough to appreciate "classic" rock and young enough to have lived punk and indie-rock, Crackerheads David Lowery and Johnny Hickman can get away with a song called "I Hate My Generation" without sounding either bitter or ironic. Rather, "I Hate My Generation," the blast of garage-rock that opens Cracker's third album, comes across as a statement of purpose: We will not be pigeonholed with any generation at all! The song also nods to "Fight This Generation" by Pavement, but where that band aims to explore the diveregent possibilities of rock's future, Cracker seems to be looking for convergences in rock's long and winding past. THE GOLDEN AGE is a Rolling Stonesy country-rock album, a Black Crowesy blues-rock album and a Southern, indie-rock, power-pop album, all in one. Awash in pastoral Southern imagery and literate musings on lost loves, and its electric guitar crunch set off by pedal steels, synthesizers and strings, it sounds like The Band gone mad. Which is to say, it sounds pretty much like The Band in the first place, drawing from all traditions of music, in search of a common soul.

Additional personnel includes: David Campbell (conductor); Dennis Herring (acoustic guitar, Mellotron, handclaps, programming, sound effects); David Immergluck (guitar, pedal steel, background vocals); Paul Shure (violin, Theremin); Michelle Richards, Armen Garabedian, Katia Popov, Bonnie Shure, Bob Peterson (violin); Rob Hajacos (fiddle); Bob Becker, Denyse Buffum (viola); Larry Corbett, Suzie Katayama (cello); Jim Cox, John Hobbs (piano); Charlie Gillingham (organ); Tony Maimone (bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); Johnny Hott (handclaps, percussion, programming); Kristin Asbury, Shannon Worrell, Joan Osborne (background vocals).

Recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee; Sound Of Music, Richmond, Virginia; Woodland Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.

Engineers include: Csaba Petocz, Chris Fuhrman, Richard Hasal.

Cracker: David Lowery (vocals, guitar, Mellotron, synthesizer, handclaps, sound effects); Johnny Hickman (guitar, baritone guitar, talkbox, harmonica, synthesizer, background vocals); Bob Rupe (synthesizer, bass, background vocals); Charlie Quintana (drums).

Spin (5/96, p.104) - 8 - Very Good - "...a sharp little combo named Cracker...elevate[s] the art of bitter sarcasm into a motivational force...on THE GOLDEN AGE [Lowery] finally sinks an emotional root that can connect all his cold little ideas..."
Entertainment Weekly (4/12/96, p.68) - "...Cracker have always flirted with the fine line between pleasantly and annoyingly quirky. GOLDEN AGE balances on that tightrope more times than it falls off..." - Rating: B
Alternative Press (8/96, p.72) - 3 (out of 5) - "...though Cracker are only onto their third album, they could've already filled four 'Best Of' collections....overall a gentler, sadder record than either of it's predecessors....THE GOLDEN AGE is another roaring success..."

5 stars cracker at it's best
If your a cracker fan, or just a fan of good ol' rocknblues, i.e stones, etc... this one is great. I just happened to stumble across it,and I was hooked from the first riff of the first song, " I hate my generation", this whole c.d. from start to finish is an accomplished piece of work.

Greatest Hits
Blood, Sweat, and Tears Greatest Hits CD  (1972) Remastered

Golden Age
CD $6.79  3.7 stars Audio Samples
This 1999 reissue contains two bonus tracks not included on the original release. Blood, Sweat & Tears includes: David Clayton-Thomas, Al Kooper, Steve Katz. Digitally remastered by Chris Athens (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). An expanded, remastered version of the group's original 1972 compilation. With two extra songs and all the familiar hits restored to their original album version lengths (as opposed to the radio-edit single versions), pound for pound, this is probably the best single-disc Blood Sweat & Tears hits package available. GREATEST HITS includes representative tracks from every phase of the band's career. Two tracks--the James Brown inspired "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and the addictive "I Can't Quit Her," are from the group's original Al Kooper-led incarnation, while two overlooked songs--"So Long Dixie" and "More and More"--are from NEW BLOOD, their 1972 album without better-known leader David Clayton-Thomas. This disc is no substitute for the Mastersounds version of the Child Is Father to the Man album, or the Mobile Fidelity version of Blood, Sweat and Tears, but it is a really smart idea. Columbia-Legacy went back and recompiled this multi-million selling album (previously available as a fairly lackluster 40-minute, 11-song CD), adding two songs ("So Long Dixie" and "More and More,") that were previously available only on singles from 1972 and 1968, respectively, and upgrading the sound. What distinguishes Blood, Sweat & Tears' Greatest Hits from the double-CD Sony-Legacy compilation What Goes Up: The Best ...
Ny Ain't So Bad: Ali Plays The Blues
Rashied Ali Ny Ain't So Bad: Ali Plays The Blues CD  (2000)

Golden Age
CD $14.65  3 stars Audio Samples
From the first in a series of obscure reissues by the Knitting Factory label, this Rashied Ali-led session from 1975 is exactly what it says it is, a blues date featuring the unusual, deep soul vocals of Royal Blue, who comes off styling his blues from the T-Bone Walker school of Texas blues crossed with the voiced passion of a Big Joe Turner and the clarity of speech that comes from Joe Williams with Count Basie. The Rashied Ali Quintet is the backing band, which featured Charles Eubanks on piano (and he is a truly amazing blues pianist), James Vass on alto sax and flute, Benny Wilson on bass, Marvin Blackman on tenor and flute, and, of course, Ali on drums. The tunes are all smoldering late-night and medium-slow blues. This is odd considering a two-horn front line, but it makes perfect sense in this setting. Ali, not content to play the straight fours the blues require, shuffles everything, syncopating each instrumental passage by triple and even quadrupling time so as to appear in synch with the rest of the band. Royal Blue's semi-sung, semi-shouted, low-key vocals are replied to, line for line, by Eubanks, whose capacity to underscore his words and add emphasis -- like a choir responding to a preacher -- is astonishing. These lyrics are fraught with feeling anyway, and given Eubanks' painterly washes through and under them, they become the heart itself emoting without fear. The horn section solos and punches Ali's beat through with modal skittering and ribbons of melodic improvisation, tampering with space and time ...
