Spice doesn't need to be original to be entertaining, nor do the Spice Girls need to be good singers. It just has to be executed well, and the innocuous dance-pop of Spice is infectious. None of the Girls have great voices, but they do exude personality and charisma, which is what drives bouncy dance-pop like "Wannabe," with its ridiculous "zig-a-zig-ahhh" hook, into pure pop guilty pleasure. What is surprising is how the sultry soul of "Say You'll Be There" is more than just a guilty pleasure, and how ballads like "2 Become 1" are perfect adult contemporary confections. The rest of the album isn't quite as catchy as those first three singles, but it is still irresistible, immaculately crafted pop that gets by on the skills of the producer and the charisma of the five Spices. Sure, the last half of the album is forgettable, but it sounds good while it's on, which is the key to a good dance-pop record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
There's a long tradition in England of kiddie-pop bands who harmonize well, look good, sell syrup by the millions in the U.K. and can't get arrested in the U.S. The Spice Girls smash that mold by adding a point of view. Having more pop hooks than your average bait & tackle shop doesn't hurt either. The five Spice Girls met when they answered a would-be svengali's ad looking for young women who could sing and dance. He got more than he bargained for. They also had spunk, and one of their first acts was to fire him and take control of their own career.
The group co-wrote every song on SPICE, and it's an audacious debut on the order of Madonna's first LP. The girls' songs, like Madonna's, are simultaneously about wanting sex and wanting empowerment; their mantra is "girl power." These are new kids on the block who've actually been around the block a few times. Calling their debut single "Wannabe" is merely the most obvious nod to the queen of pop; they pay further homage in the brazen way they grab for any pop style within reach. Hip-hop, dancehall reggae, dance-club beats and soft balladry and all thrown into this spicy pop stew with utter abandon. Vocal lines are wantonly tossed back and forth among the five like unsuspecting suitors. If they can figure out a way to keep it up, watch out.Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.80) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's."
Spin (2/97, p.87) - "...Unless a new sensation arrives in the next few minutes, Spice Girls are the new Nirvana."
Entertainment Weekly (2/14/97, p.61) - "...what lifts the Spice Girls above female--Bay City Rollers status is that SPICE is a devilishly good pop collection, as the Girls deploy their thin, snarky voices in the service of white hip-hop that's not without soul..." - Rating: B+
Village Voice (2/18/97, pp.65-69) - "...their excess spunk already has allowed them to transcend their manufactured roots....the Spice Girls are Madonna X 5 and their debut sets the stage for their future as confidently as the Material Girl's glorious first LP..."
NME (Magazine) (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #50 in NME's 1996 critics' poll.

5 stars THE BIGGEST POP PHENOMENOM IN THE LATE 90'S
The Spice Girls came out in 1996, with the smash hit "Wannabe", one of biggest songs of history. Their "girl power" style made all the world fall in love with them. Spice Girls' talent for singing and dancing made their debut album, "Spice", sell about 27 million copies worldwide. This is a great album, with great tracks, like "Say You'll Be There" and "Who Do You Think You Are". Well, it's pretty cheap in here, so it's a good chance for you to buy this one. You won't be dissapointed at all. Spice up your life with the Spice Girls playing in your stereo!

The Spice Girls, as well as their managers and songwriters, are nothing if not clever, and Spiceworld, the group's second album, illustrates exactly how sharp they are. Conventional wisdom dictates that Spiceworld should be a weak facsimile of Spice, which itself featured a handful of great singles surrounded by filler. Conventional wisdom, in this case, is wrong -- Spiceworld is a better record than its predecessor, boasting a more consistent (and catchier) set of songs and an intoxicating sense of fun. Instead of merely rewriting Spice, Spiceworld consolidates and expands the group's style, adding Latin flourishes ("Spice Up Your Life"), kitschy blues ("The Lady Is a Vamp"), and stomping, neo-Motown blue-eyed soul ...

Sounding like a post-alternative version of the Jackson 5 -- complete with effervescent harmonies, sunny melodies, rolling hip-hop beats, and dense, layered productions -- Hanson is positively bubbling energy throughout its surprisingly infectious and melodic debut, Middle of Nowhere. It's hard not to hear the lead single, "MMMBop," or the similary infectious "Where's the ...

Savage Garden is light, catchy, and undeniably melodic, and it's hard to believe they released their debut album in the late, not early, '90s. It's easy to say that their breakthrough single, "I Want You," sounds like a revamped Roxette, but it's accurate -- it has a breezy chorus and frothy production that make it an appealing slice of mainstream pop, the kind banished from the airwaves in 1992. Occasionally, Savage Garden reach that peak elsewhere on their eponymous debut -- most notably on the second single "To the Moon and Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply" -- but they lack the vision and discipline to make the record anything more than fitfully entertaining. But those highlights almost make the album worthwhile. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Pieces of You is a charming debut that is somewhat undone by its own naïveté. Picking up the Brown/Holness story where Some Like It Hot left off, Open the Gate rounds up most of the rest of the pair's 1970s material. The singer recorded exclusively with the Observer from 1973 and 1975, and those songs made up the bulk of Hot. After a trial separation, so to speak, during 1976, Brown returned to Holness' side early in the new year, and recorded a new batch of equally crucial cuts. The most seminal -- "Wolf and Leopards" and "Tribulation" -- are found on Hot; the rest appear here, alongside a handful of rarities. Collectors will revel in the cuts culled from albums, the 12" extended mix of "Tenement Yard," an alternate version of John Holt's "Only a Smile" (one of four excellent covers found here), Dillinger's DJ version of "Here I Come," and, most spectacularly, a ferocious live version of "Cassandra," seeing the light of day for the first time here. In some ways, Gate is a greater revelation, and not just for collectors. Hot's hits are so familiar from previous compilations that the very freshness of these tracks enables the listener to discover Brown's power anew. Holness' deep roots production played to the singer's strengths, while the Soul Syndicates' impeccable playing is also showcased. There's a palpable chemistry at work here, with all the parties involved pulling out all the stops, not just on their own behalf, but to also complement each other. ...

Aladdin Sane: 30th Anniversary
David Bowie Aladdin Sane: 30th Anniversary CD  (1973) (Import) Japan; Limited Edition; Special Edition

Spice
CD $56.29
The 30th Anniversary edition of David Bowie's Aladdin Sane contains the classics "Panic in Detroit" and "Jean Genie," among others, with beautifully remastered sound.
The Japanese version comes with book-style packaging.
This 2003 set packages David Bowie's Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs in one budget-priced set. These are not the Ryko reissues with bonus tracks these are the remastered EMI versions with no bonuses, which is the only way these discs are now available, and this is a nice, quick, affordable way to get both these records at once. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Ziggy Stardust wrote the blueprint for David Bowie's hard-rocking glam, and Aladdin Sane essentially follows the pattern, for both better and worse. A lighter affair than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane is actually a stranger album than its predecessor, buoyed by bizarre lounge-jazz flourishes from pianist Mick Garson and a handful of winding, vaguely experimental songs. Bowie abandons his futuristic obsessions to concentrate on the detached cool of New York and London hipsters, as on the compressed rockers "Watch That Man," "Cracked Actor," and "The Jean Genie." Bowie follows the hard stuff with the jazzy, dissonant sprawls of "Lady Grinning Soul," "Aladdin Sane," and "Time," all of which manage to be both campy and avant-garde simultaneously, while the sweepingly cinematic "Drive-In Saturday" is a soaring fusion of sci-fi doo wop and melodramatic teenage glam. He lets his paranoia slip through in the clenched rhythms of "Panic in Detroit," as well as on his oddly clueless cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together." For all the pleasures on Aladdin Sane, there's no distinctive sound or theme to make the album cohesive; it's Bowie riding the wake of Ziggy Stardust, which means there's a wealth of classic material here, but not enough focus to make the album itself a classic. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
It's no surprise that ALADDIN SANE and PIN UPS came out in the same year. Each drip with the seedy sexuality of London's late '60s sexual revolution. Yet, while PIN UPS was a mid-'60s sampling of influences--a glorified cover album--ALADDIN SANE was all Bowie.
Stepping out of the Ziggy ...

Too Much Junkie Business
Johnny Thunders Too Much Junkie Business CDs  (2006) Reissued

Spice
CD $12.05
As a founder member of both The New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers as well as a highly respected solo performer, Johnny Thunders was a hugely influential figure in the development of punk in the '70s. This two CD set captures him live in LA in 1987, a vintage gig in Detroit from 1980 and one of his last ever gigs before his tragically young death at just 38 in Osaka, Japan in 1991. 45 tracks including 'London Boys', 'You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory', 'Chinese Rocks', 'Play With Fire' and more. Snapper. 2006. Personnel: Johnny Thunders (vocals, guitar); Stevie Klasson (vocals, guitar); Barry Jones, Walter Lure (guitar); Jerry Nolan (drums).
Liner Note Author: Jet Martin Celmins.
Recording information: Osaka, Japan (12/21/1980-04/04/1990); Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles, CA (12/21/1980-04/04/1990); The Silverbird, Detroit, MI (12/21/1980-04/04/1990).
Even though Johnny Thunders died in 1991, he's managed to maintain the sort of busy release schedule that Tupac Shakur might envy, though like Tupac, Thunders' posthumous recording career is primarily devoted to recycling various scraps of tape the musician imprudently left behind. Too Much Junkie Business is a two-disc set that recycles live material from three different Johnny Thunders live shows, all of which have been released before on various albums. Disc one is devoted to a 1987 show in Los Angeles (previously released as Panic on Sunset Strip; a video of this show is also available) which reunited Thunders with his former New York Dolls bandmates Arthur Kane on bass and Jerry Nolan on drums. While the set in question sounds a lot more like the Heartbreakers than the Dolls thanks to the song list, having a simpatico rhythm section for a change certainly makes a difference, and Thunders sounds relatively focused and confident here, with the sloppiness purposeful rather than a product of his take-it-or-leave-it attitude towards his craft. Disc two starts out with a ten-song set recorded in Detroit near the end of 1980, with Thunders fronting a pared-down version of the Heartbreakers; Thunders sounds dismissive of his audience, and while there are many worse live tapes of the man floating around, there are also plenty of better ones. (This show was previously circulated on the album Thunderstorm in Detroit.) And finally, this package closes with a genuine curio -- an acoustic show in which Thunders is accompanied only by his guitar and Stevie Klasson on saxophone, which took place in Tokyo only 15 days before Thunders' death. While he was never as compelling on the acoustic guitar as he was on the electric, there's an emotional urgency to this performance that compensates for it, and Klasson's sax work adds some unexpected textures ...
