The success of the new age compilation Pure Moods in early 1997 led to the release of Celtic Moods later in the year. Like its predecessor, Celtic Moods is essentially a new age collection -- here, Celtic is code for mystic. A few songs, such as the Waterboys' "Strange Boat," adhere to the earthy spirit of Irish folk, but much of the music -- including cuts by Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Ashley MacIsaac, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Altan, Christy Moore, and the Edge/Sinéad O'Connor -- is atmospheric and ambient, evoking the mystical elements of Celtic music. In other words, if you're looking for true Irish folk, go elsewhere -- this is new age music with vaguely Celtic overtones, and if you're a fan of that style, there's no better compilation available than Celtic Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
