Increasingly ignored amidst the exploding trip-hop scene, Massive Attack finally returned in 1998 with Mezzanine, a record immediately announcing not only that the group was back, but that they'd recorded a set of songs just as singular and revelatory as on their debut, almost a decade back. It all begins with a stunning one-two-three-four punch: "Angel," "Risingson," "Teardrop," and "Inertia Creeps." Augmenting their samples and keyboards with a studio band, Massive Attack open with "Angel," a stark production featuring pointed beats and a distorted bassline that frames the vocal (by group regular Horace Andy) and a two-minute flame-out with raging guitars. "Risingson" is a dense, dark feature for Massive Attack themselves (on production as well as vocals), with a kitchen sink's worth of dubby effects and reverb. "Teardrop" introduces another genius collaboration -- with Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins -- from a production unit with a knack for recruiting gifted performers. The blend of earthy with ethereal shouldn't work at all, but Massive Attack pull it off in fine fashion. "Inertia Creeps" could well be the highlight, another feature for just the core threesome. With eerie atmospherics, fuzz-tone guitars, and a wealth of effects, the song could well be the best production from the best team of producers the electronic world had ever seen. Obviously, the rest of the album can't compete, but there's certainly no sign of the side-two slump heard on Protection, as both Andy and Fraser return for excellent, mid-tempo tracks ("Man Next Door" and "Black Milk," respectively). ~ John Bush What do you do when you've already changed the face of music once in a decade? If you're Bristol, UK sonic architects Massive Attack, you refine the model for the times. MEZZANINE, the third album from the producer/DJ crew who, for all intents and purposes, created the genre of trip-hop, is thicker, less spacious and far more guitar-heavy than their previous efforts. Then again, the blue-print remains: hip-hop beats, behemoth bass underpinnings and spare melodic overtones still control Massive Attack's drive. After all, one doesn't expect the inventors to abandon their discoveries just because every pop new jack is onto their gold mine.Spin (1/99, p.91) - Ranked #6 on Spin's list of "Top 20 Albums of '98." Entertainment Weekly (5/15/98, pp.102-103) - "MEZZANINE is Victorian trip-hop--hulking, clangorous, and dank....It's industrial music for the turn of the century--the 19th century." - Rating: A- Q (12/99, p.100) - Included in Q Magazine's "90 Best Albums Of The 1990s." Real masterpiece This album of Massive Attack is a real masterpiece in music. I mean it. Ultimate professionality. Every track in this album was my the most favourite in different periods. Especially 'Angel' - I can't tell why I love this song; maybe it's just a reflection of rage feelings. Tenderness of Liz Fraser's voice in 'Black Milk' is perfect. Well, as they say, it's better one time to listen then 100 times to hear. If you want to know what music can be, this album have to be your guide. A Classic is Born Im tired so this will be short but sweet. This CD is an amazing melting pot of everything Massive Attack is. Very intense, beautiful, haunting and ahead of its time. BUY IT! Submitted by David Jeannelle (Dever, Colorado USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
stunning (and theyre local!!) yeeeeeeessss!!!! this amazing band from my home city bristol has now 5 albums to their name (including the remix album "no protection" and their new album "100th window"), and this is the best! it is just so atmospheric and dark (the sort of thing thats best listened to in a dark, confined space). the first three tracks are outstanding but are all very different - "teardrop" is a beautiful song, brilliantly sung by...i can't remember her name but she has a lovely voice. "angel" is excellent, and "risingson" is my joint favourite on the album alongside teardrop because the atmosphere the song produces by the bassline, strange sounds and creepy vocals of 3D and daddy-g - both perfect for this song and album. the rest of the album is also amazing but i think you would like me to shut up so i will end now by saying that this album is a true classic and everyone should own it. $11.65 Massive Attack: Mushroom, 3-D, Daddy G. Additional personnel includes: Tricky, Horace Andy, Shara Nelson (vocals); Paul Johnson (bass). The first masterpiece of what was only termed trip-hop much later, Blue Lines filtered American hip-hop through the lens of British club culture, a stylish, nocturnal sense of scene that encompassed music from rare groove to dub to dance. The album balances dark, diva-led club jams along the lines of Soul II Soul with some of the best British rap (vocals and production) heard up to that point, occasionally ...
