ADORE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
In the wake of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's departure, the Pumpkins have taken a giant step away from the grunge-flavored, turbo-powered alt-rock anthems that made them famous. On ADORE, Billy Corgan and company opt instead for a more scaled-down approach that relies heavily on acoustic instruments and ballads of love and longing. Corgan may still be expressing angst here, but he does it in an understated, romantic way, addressing matters of the heart with subtlety and maturity on tunes like "Shame" and "To Sheila."
Don't take all this acoustic-based balladry (a path also explored by James Iha on his solo debut) as a sign that the band is out of touch with contemporary production trends, though. Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb is on hand to add a sprinkling of electronica to the proceedings via his programming talents. His contributions, like much of ADORE itself, remains modestly unobtrusive, providing just the right underpinning for some of the tunes. As the album ends with a solo piano instrumental, we're reminded that Smashing Pumpkins are a band who refuse to ossify, constantly changing and evolving. ADORE is just one more leg of their continuing journey.

Rolling Stone (6/11/98, pp.115-116) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...a complete break with the past....dials down the volume to lullaby level....overflows with heartsick valentines. Corgan...sings with an almost androgynous delicacy, sometimes supported by little more than a piano or a guitar..." Entertainment Weekly (6/5/98, pp.78-79) - "...Corgan barely raises his voice to the angsty caterwaul that makes people either love him or hate him, but his voice and lyrics remain unsettled and unsettling. Pretty on the outside, the album is dark and obsessive beneath; let's call it passive-aggressive rock..." - Rating: B+ Adore Music | List Price | $17.98 (You save $4.13) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Alternative, Punk, Rock/Pop | | Label | Virgin | | Orig Year | 1998 | | All Time Sales Rank | 712 | | CD Universe Part number | 1033244 | | Catalog number | 45879 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jun 02, 1998 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Billy Flemion; Jimmy Flemion; Billy Corgan; Brad Wood | | Recording Time | 72 minutes | | Personnel | Joey Waronker Billy Corgan James Iha D'Arcy - vocals, organ Dennis Flemion Jimmy Flemion - vocals

Smashing Pumpkins Adore Songs Adore Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I Adore "Adore"! I can honestly say that no one can compare to the Smashing Pumpkins--they are different from any band I've ever heard. Being in my forties, I've heard a lot of music over time. Their style reminds me a little of BOC, the Goth element, and the love ballads are similar to those sung by the Beatles. A great album! A spiritual, intimate journey to your soul This was the first CD I ever bought when I was 14 years old some 9 years ago... I admit at first I only liked a few songs but I still can listen constantly to this album and in my opinion it is one of the best I've ever heard together with Mellon Collie & Siamese Dreams...
1. To Sheila (10/10) - This song sets the mood for the album. From the very first acoustic guitar notes you'll know you're in for something delicate, ethereal, intimate, atmospheric, lullaby-like and special... This song is one of the lushest the Pumpkins ever released and while listening to this tune u can forget everything around and just let Billy speak to your soul!
2. Adore (10/10) - After a short break following To Sheila the Pumpkins return to their "roots" with an electric guitar driven number. This is a symphonic electronic goth rocker which sounds nothing like they had done before with stunning results. A perfect 1, 2 start!
3. Perfect (9.5/10) - The cousin of 1979 but more in the atmospheric vein of Adore. This song is upbeat and catchy and was the song that made me get this album. I haven't given it 10 because I've overplayed it!
4. Daphne Descends (9.5/10) - This song crosses Adore with Perfect. Very melodic and very underrated!
5. Once Upon A Time (9.7/10) - Dedicated for his late mum! Somehow this song reminds me of "In The Arms Of Sleep". Lyrically it's saddening, the tune is almost whimsical, Billy builds this song to a crescendo in it's final minute.
6. Tear (10/10)
This song is one of the best epics of the Pumpkins. It is the rockiest song on the album yet it has got electronic breakdowns. The song builds into something tragic and symphonic by the end. BRILLIANT!
7. Crestfallen (10/10) A piano/electronic ballad that sends chills down your spine. A song that leaves you breathless yet in a state of peace. I love the sound-effect of a closing door at the end!
8. Appeles & Oranjes (9.7/10) This song sees the Smashing Pumpkins at the peak of their electronic venture. The beats are very fast here. The song comes in like a torrential downpour.
9. Pug (10/10) This song is sexy! It feels like a gothic/industrial/electronic rocker. I love the baseline on this song. One of D'Arcy's best offerings. A very underrated song that should have been a single!
10. Tale Of Dusty (9.2/10) I do like the acoustic guitars on this track. Electronic effects are almost absent and even though the song itself is very strong somehow it doesnt shine like the others. I have to say that this is one of the catchiest on the album.
11. Annie Dog (9.5/10) Strange! But somehow it works very well. This is a lighter song and somehow it feels jazzy to my ears. This song has the power to tranquilize you. Excellent!
12. Shame (9.3/10) Opinions are split on this track! some see at as their best, some not as much. This is the 2nd longest track on the album and sounds like a haunting piano ballad with some weird electro-noises.
13. Behold (9.5/10) One of the least catchy songs on the album. At first it doesn't stand out either. This song's structure is similar to Shame's haunting piano ballad with some weird electro-noises and more concise. This song starts the final 3 songs climax of the album.
14. For Martha (10/10) Heart wrenching! This song builds with majesty and sorrow at equal parts. A piano ballad that is more raw than it's previous to songs yet it still boasts a haunting electronic background noise. This song unfurls and unfurls from a slow driven introduction to a rocking conclusion.
15. Blank Page (10/10) - A song the strikes at the heart. You can almost imagine Billy crying while singing it. Very emotional. The song is a minimal piano ballad with a few haunting electronic noises. One of my favourite Pumpkin songs ever.
To anyone who loves music, this record is essential!

You can't handle the truth! I'm as cynical as the next guy, and for many years I thought Corgan was pretentious dork with a Jesus complex. But this is truly special record. Those who diss it for being dull or somehow not a "real" pumpkins record, or for being a self-indulgent mess -- chalk it up to a simple case of "not their cup of tea." But if you appreciate emotional, ethereal, yet powerful music - there is simply no way this record will not win you over...if you give it time. Masterpiece? Well, there a couple of filler songs on there - -so it falls short of that distinction. But, it is oh so friggin' close. This record still kills me 10 years after I unsuspectingly bought it. The best SP This album is the best I've personally heard by Corgan's band. It's got that psychedelic touch to it which the previous albums don't have! There is not one single song on the album to be dumped!
