Newsboys: Peter Furler (vocals, guitar, drums, programming); Jody Davis, Phil Joel (guitar, bass, background vocals); Jeff Frankenstein (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Duncan Phillips (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Blair Masters, Love Sponge String Quartet (strings); Jonathan Roberts (trumpet). Like bubble gum, from which this band's brand of pop gets its name, this band is sweet but not very nourishing. Their radio-ready tunes all sound like singles, but the hooks mask a serious lack of substance. ~ Tim Sheridan This is not your grandfather's Christianity. Following the trail blazed by Jars Of Clay, Petra and the now-legendary Stryper, these Aussies bring their message to the masses by wrapping it in a familiar package. But just because it walks like a slacker, talks, dresses and shaves its head like a slacker, it isn't necessarily a slacker. Making sure they have all their bases covered, the Newsboys move from the alt-rock opening track ("WooHoo") to White-boy funk ("Step Up To The Microphone") and trip-hop ("Entertaining Angels"), all within the first three tracks. All the while, the Newsboys stay true to their purpose of bringing the word of God to rock fans. Unlike their brethren, however, their lyrics are well crafted and never come across as too preachy. They even let a little doubt creep in, as in "Believe" ("I just believe it/and sometimes I dunno why") but in the end they "know a line is crooked/'cause we know what's straight." | | Willie Nelson Complete Atlantic Sessions CDs (2006) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Step Up To The Microphone
$30.19 Includes bonus tracks. Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Waylon Jennings (guitar, background vocals); Larry Gatlin (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Red Lane (acoustic guitar); David Bromberg, Steve Burgh (electric guitar); James Clayton Day (pedal steel guitar, dobro); Johnny Gimble (mandolin, fiddle); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); The Memphis Horns (horns); Augie Meyers, Bobbie Nelson (piano); Jeff Gutcheon (electric piano, organ); Barry Beckett (keyboards); Dan Spears, David Hood (bass guitar); Roger Hawkins, Arif Mardin, Paul English, Steve Mosley (drums). Just before becoming a paragon of "outlaw country" with the release of 1975's iconic RED-HEADED STRANGER on Columbia Records, Willie Nelson spent a brief and largely overlooked time at Atlantic, releasing only two albums. However, longtime fans now consider 1973's rock-&-roll-influenced SHOTGUN WILLIE and 1974's autobiographical concept album, PHASES AND STAGES, to be two of the Texas singer-songwriter's finest albums. THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC SESSIONS is an outstanding overview of Nelson's time with Atlantic, presenting both albums in full along with a complete 1974 show recorded at Austin's Texas Opry House for a planned live album that was scrapped when Nelson changed labels. Along with remastered sound and extensive liner notes, this three-disc set adds a total of 27 outtakes, demos, and alternate versions. It's easy to argue that Willie Nelson's two albums for Atlantic, 1973's Shotgun Willie and 1974's Phases and Stages, are his two best albums. Recorded between his 1972 departure from his longtime home RCA and before his star-making stint at Columbia, these two albums are the roots of Nelson's brand of outlaw country, where he casually fueled Nashville songwriting with Texan Western swing, pop melodies, folk storytelling, hard country, lazy blues, and a renegade sensibility borrowed from rock & roll, all spiked with a little bit of jazz. Add to this his increasing fascination with themes that played out over the course of a full album -- Shotgun Willie was an outlaw's ...
