Tela's NOW OR NEVER is distinguished by the sophistication of it's production and the advanced conceptualism at work throughout its smoothly-flowing 20 (!) cuts. The range of musical styles drawn on for the tracks is remarkable; everything from funk and R&B to pop and even classical music is employed here. There's a grandness to the themes here, which raise the typical gangsta concerns to an almost mythical level. This grandiose approach doesn't mean that there's any immediacy or viscerality sacrificed on NOW OR NEVER, though--it resonates like the most street-credible hop-hop. Listening to what will surely be viewed as Tela's masterwork, the listener is transported into an almost cinematic experience; think of NOW OR NEVER as the greatest hip-hop film you never saw.

Now Or Never
$15.95 R. was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I'm Your Angel" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "When A Woman's Fed Up" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
R. Kelly proves that he's as prolific as he is talented on the two-disc set R., which not only culls together his most noteworthy and successful work, but is bursting with new tracks as well. Filled from start to finish with Kelly's unique blend of smooth vocal stylings and no-nonsense lyrical stance, this album also features the work of a few of his prominent friends--the opener, "Home Alone" sports a guest rap courtesy of Keith Murray, while "Money Makes The World Go Round" is graced by Nas.
A more mainstream pairing is witnessed in the dramatic show stopper "I'm your Angel," which finds Kelly alongside superstar Celine Dion, but the collaboration which really makes its mark is "We Ride," which features Cam'Ron, Noreaga, Jay-Z and Vegas Cats in a veritable who's who of Hip Hop's brightest stars. As if all this weren't enough, the mega-hit "I Believe I Can Fly" is included for good measure. Newcomers to the world of R. Kelly will be attracted by the hits, but they're sure to stay for the instant classics and ...
| | 5th Ward Boyz Usual Suspects CD (1997)
Now Or Never
$11.99 The 5th Ward Boyz took their name from the same infamous Houston ghetto that gave the world the Geto Boys, one of the first groups to embrace gangsta rap in the 1980s. Like the Geto Boys, the 5th Ward Boyz specialized in gangsta rap and offered violent, profane depictions of life in the Fifth Ward. But while the early gangsta rap of the Geto Boys, Ice-T, N.W.A, and Schoolly D had a definite freshness and was quite cutting-edge, there's nothing fresh about Usual Suspects. "Got II Be Down II Die," "Heat," "Pussy, Weed and Alcohol," and other tunes on this routine, unoriginal effort don't say anything that older gangsta rappers weren't saying eight years earlier. A few of the songs are memorable -- most notably "Live Your Life" and "Mama's Praying," which describes a mother's prayer that her son won't get caught up in the criminality that surrounds her in the ghetto. But on the whole, Usual Suspects demonstrated that in 1997 there were still many rappers who were content to offer one tired, worn-out gangsta rap cliché after another. ~ Alex Henderson
Usual Suspects, the 5th Ward Boyz's third album, isn't dramatically different than Rated G or Ghetto Dope -- it's a collection of straightahead gangsta-funk, with rolling beats, deep bass ...
| | Willie D Loved By Few, Hated By Many CDs (2000)
Now Or Never
$11.89 One third of original Southern gangsters The Geto Boys, Willie D's not one for fluff or bubble gum rap. His beats are cutting, and he's straight to the point and abrasive.
"Wet 'M" is dedicated to radio-friendly artists, a tale of stalking and "shooting them up like a syringe," reminding everyone that he's seen it all and there's nothing new out there. "Lil' Killaz" weaves the story of a kid who looks up to the Geto Boys, wants money and power, disregards his family and anything else stopping his rise to the top, and his eventual demise. "Dear God" uses a clever interpolation of the XTC song of the same name, but twists it into a straight-faced plea to God to help both Willie's fading sanity and humanity. The Hot Boyz give a dedication to Willie and his former band mates in "Dem Boyz," reminiscing on how they looked up to the Geto Boys and how the band made them what they are today. ...
| | B G Chopper City CD (1999)

Releasing dub versions of recent hits (if not whole albums) is, of course, a Jamaican tradition. And being the students of reggae that UB40 were, they dutifully followed that tradition with their second album. The results were ...
| | Kinks BBC Sessions 1964-1977 CDs (2001)
Now Or Never
$15.09 Digitally remastered by Ray Davies & Andy Pearce (January 2001, Masterpiece).
Is it possible that the early Kinks could be even rawer and more exciting in BBC halls than on their known Pye Records recordings? Sometimes yes, otherwise very nearly. A few of these -- notably a breathless rave-up of Bo Diddley's "Cadillac" -- are indeed even more spark-ridden than the LP versions. Most of the merely curious will delight in new looks at the punishing stomp of the original blockbuster 1964 hits "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All the Night." Likewise, this is like hearing "Tired of Waiting," "Till the End of the Day," "Days," and a faster-paced "Love Me 'Til the Sun Shines" for the first time, the feeling is still so powerful in such fresh looks at seminal creations. And for the ardent fan, it's the procession of little differences and inspired takes that quietly push the tingle buttons -- especially as one gets deeper into disc one. You note an unexpected piano on "Waterloo Sunset" by Nicky Hopkins, on a louder version that's as unusual as it is ...
