Without Brian Eno, Roxy Music immediately became less experimental, yet it remained adventurous, as Stranded illustrates. Under the direction of Bryan Ferry, Roxy moved toward relatively straightforward territory, adding greater layers of piano and heavy guitars. Even without the washes of Eno's synthesizers, Roxy's music remains unsettling on occasion, yet in this new incarnation, they favor more measured material, whether it's the reflective "A Song for Europe" or the shifting textures of "Psalm." Even the rockers, such as the surging "Street Life" and the segmented "Mother of Pearl," are distinguished by subtle songwriting that emphasizes both Ferry's tortured glamour and Roxy's increasingly impressive grasp of sonic detail. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Roxy Music began to reign in its unsettling, quirky art rock on STRANDED, the band's third album. Without keyboardist/idea man Brain Eno in the band any longer, vocalist Bryan Ferry assumed full control of Roxy Music's musical direction, moving toward a less overtly experimental, yet still progressive and eccentric style. Ferry still sings in a camp-styled croon, part Noel Coward, part Lou Reed, yet his songwriting is sharper and more nuanced here, as the enigmatic "Psalm" and the multi-part "Mother of Pearl" convey. STRANDED introduced violinist Eddie Jobson, whose contributions slotted in perfectly alongside reed player Andy Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzanera. A sense of cohesion permeates the set, group members contribute lyrically, but there was no denying that this incarnation of the band represents Ferry's vision. Melodically strong, the album provides an ideal structure for Ferry's quirky intonation, resulting in a heady mix of experimentation and commercial acumen.Q (9/99, pp.122-3) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...more conventional, less progressive, and some, like 'Mother Of Pearl', seem extended for the sake of it..." Stranded
$13.15 First time on CD, digitally remastered reissue of 1981 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. This hard rocker initially peaked at #27. Reprise. 2003.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar). Crazy Horse: Frank Sampedro, Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina. Producers: Neil Young, David Briggs, Tim Mulligan, Jerry Napier. Recorded at Modern Recorders, Redwood City, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. The remastered special-edition version marks the album's first CD release, and features a vinyl-inspired design. Neil Young employs Crazy Horse to help him bash out a guitar-drenched hard rock set made up of thrown-together material. The group plays fiercely, as usual, but the lyrics are sketchy, seemingly improvised (the nadir is the nine-minute "T-Bone," which consists of the lines "Got mashed potato/Ain't got no t-bone" repeated over and over), and frequently cranky, as in "Motor City," which finds Young criticizing Japanese cars, and "Rapid Transit," which takes a belated swipe at new wave music while sounding like second-rate Talking Heads. For the second album in a row, Young seems to be just fulfilling his one-album-a-year record contract. The exception is the album-closing "Shots" (written by 1978), a more substantive and threatening song given a riveting performance. Later, it would be revealed that Young was finding time for his music while giving most of his attention to caring for his disabled son. Still, he might have been better advised to have suspended record-making for a few years instead of turning out half-baked efforts like this one. ~ William Ruhlmann The news that Neil Young is recording with Crazy Horse usually means that fans are in for a superior, rocking effort. Not this time. Young could have written the songs in an afternoon (one consists of the repeated lines, "Got mashed potato / Ain't got no t-bone") ...
