Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Edwin Johnson (strings, keyboards, synthesizer); Andrew Mackay (oboe, saxophone); John Gustafson (bass); Paul Thompson (drums). Recorded at Air Studios, London, England in 1975. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Abandoning the intoxicating blend of art rock and glam-pop that distinguished Stranded and Country Life, Roxy Music concentrates on Bryan Ferry's suave, charming crooner persona for the elegantly modern Siren. As the disco-fied opener "Love Is the Drug" makes clear, Roxy embraces dance and unabashed pop on Siren, weaving them into their sleek, arty sound. It does come at the expense of their artier inclinations, which is part of what distinguished Roxy, but the end result is captivating. Lacking the consistently amazing songs of its predecessor, Siren has a thematic consistency that works in its favor, and helps elevate its best songs -- "Sentimental Fool," "Both Ends Burning," "Just Another High" -- as well as the album itself into the realm of classics. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Roxy Music's fifth album, SIREN, is a return to the form of their first couple of records--that is, it mixes astonishing material with some that, well, isn't quite as good. This is not to say that the band abandoned sophistication, however. If anything, they turned the suaveness up a notch--tracks like "Sentimental Fool" and the brilliant "Just Another High" both, albeit in different ways, suggest the path the band would follow before arriving at their masterpiece, AVALON. For those keeping track of these things, the cover model on this album is Jerry Hall. "Love Is The Drug," the album's first track, is a classic. A story-song that could describe the beginning of the relationship that dissolves in "Dance Away" (from MANIFESTO, the band's next studio album), it is built on solid rhythm grooves with added flourishes of bright guitar. Bryan Ferry's vocals are more expressive than usual on "Both Ends Burning," a fairly sedate, but insistent dance groove with synthesizers weaving in and out of the propulsive bass line. SIREN, as the middle album in the band's studio career, includes pointers to both their past and future and is an excellent introduction to the worlds of Roxy Music.Q (9/99, pp.122-3) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...their glossiest set...as gorgeously epic as 'Sentimental Fool' and as percussively hedonistic as 'Both Ends Burning'..." Vibe (12/99, p.164) - Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century Mojo (Publisher) (9/99, p.120) - "...a slick but largely convincing set of performances that owed little to the original Roxy spirit but suited Ferry's lounge lizard persona to a tee." | | Wire On Returning CD (1989) (Import) United Kingdom
Siren
$14.45 On Returning gathers most of the jewels from the richest period in the career of Wire, one of the most influential bands to emerge from the punk era. Groups as diverse as R.E.M and the Minutemen have cited Wire as a key influence. Wire's 1977 debut was densely packed with skewed, raw songs full of vitriol and quintessentially English insolence, while the two subsequent releases showcased the group's art-school leanings as the sound grew darker and more dissonant. This generous 31-song collection effectively charts the group's rapid evolution. It begins with a slew of songs from the debut, PINK FLAG, including "Three Girl Rhumba", a song that '90s Brit-popsters Elastica quoted so liberally that they were forced to pay royalties. The early songs have a messy charm built upon dirty guitar chords and the distinctly cheeky vocalsof Colin Newman. Later works, incorporating synthesizers and keyboards played by producer Mike Thorne, are far more caustic, but the group never fully drops the pop, especially onthe furiously catchy "Dot Dash" and "I Am the Fly", one of their signature songs. "Strange" may be familiar to listeners from R.E.M.'s cover version. EMI.
Wire: Colin Newman, B.C. Gilbert (vocals, guitars); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); Robert Gotobed (drums). On Returning (1977-1979) is a generous 31-song overview of Wire's punk heyday, covering the albums Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154, plus several songs that appeared only on non-album singles. Subsequent CD reissues by Restless have added nearly all of those rarities to the original albums as bonus tracks (the sole exception is the fine "Dot Dash"), so the compilation isn't quite as useful for devoted fans as it once was. Furthermore, even if On Returning is a handy way to chart Wire's rapid musical development, their progression is better heard on the individual albums, all of which create their own distinct musical moods. However, On Returning does have its advantages: first and foremost, it culls nearly all of the group's best songs from the time period ("Mannequin" is missing, and the selection from 154 is somewhat botched -- omitting the brilliant "Map Ref. 41øN 93øW," among others, is inexcusable). And listeners with a low tolerance for artiness may find this a more concise and acceptable way to familiarize themselves with this important band; make no mistake, Wire's experiments with sonic texture and song structure are willfully challenging, although ultimately well worth the effort. So, the bottom line ...
| | Aaron Carter Another Earthquake! CD (2002)
Siren
$8.49 Personnel includes: Aaron Carter, The Baja Men. Producers include: Lucas & Mickey P, Dreamscape, Shep & Kenny, Riprock 'N' Alex G. When the voice changes, the career changes for any preteen pop idol. For Aaron Carter, the change is particularly bad -- he acknowledges as much on "To All the Girls," the second song on his third album, Another Earthquake!, when he sings "growing up can be so strange." That's not the half of it. Not to be rude, but the voice change -- noticeable on the previous Oh Aaron but in full effect here -- has stripped him of any of his charm; he may still look cute, but he sounds like a gangly, awkward teenager. In a bizarre turn of events, this maturation coincides with a selection of ten songs utterly lacking in the unsettling ...

Siren
$13.69 Personnel: John Beasley (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Bennie Maupin (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Brian Lynch (trumpet); James Genus (acoustic bass, electric bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums); Munyungo Jackson (percussion). Audio Mixers: Pierre Paul; John Beasley; Joe Donofrio. Liner Note Authors: Dan Ouellette; Dan Ouellette. Recording information: Bennett Studios, Englewood, NJ (04/2009). Keyboardist John Beasley's positive, vibrant take on a variety of modern jazz styles takes shape on this recording, where his playing and ample talent as a composer are showcased. This effort takes into account his New Orleans heritage with an incumbent approach, embraces hard bop, and on occasion fusion or a look at the funky side of things. The core trio of Beasley, drummer Jeff Watts, and bassist James Genus is an unstoppable force, while trumpeter Brian Lynch and especially Bennie Maupin on tenor and soprano sax, elevate the band to all-star small-ensemble status on select tracks. Beasley's emphasis is on the acoustic piano, but he also uses a little synthesizer and some savory Fender Rhodes, all with a skilled, professional, and inspired expertise that is lifted up by his heavyweight bandmates. He also wrote seven of the ten tracks, including a remake of an older tune, ...
