Returning to action after four years of solo projects, Roxy Music redefined its sound and agenda on Manifesto. More than ever, Roxy sounds like Bryan Ferry's backing band, as the group strips away its art rock influences, edits out the instrumental interludes in favor of concise pop songs, and adds layers of stylish disco rhythms. Although the songwriting is distressingly inconsistent, there are a number of wonderful moments on the record, particularly in the sighing "Angel Eyes" and the heartbroken "Dance Away." Still, trading sonic adventure for lush, accessible disco-pop isn't entirely satisfactory, even if it is momentarily seductive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine MANIFESTO was Roxy Music's 1979 return after a hiatus of several years. This second phase of the band continued in the direction begun with their 1975 album SIREN. Lush romanticism now enveloped their sound, softening the barbs and burrs that had been a characteristic since their art school beginnings with Brian Eno at the start of the decade. MANIFESTO yielded several hits and songs of enduring popularity in the Bryan Ferry songbook, notably "Angel Eyes" and "Dance Away." The latter, in fact, sounds of a piece with Ferry's eighties solo work--gorgeous, lush, and exceedingly romantic. This album and its two successors (FLESH & BLOOD and AVALON) effectively form a bridge from the glam-rock of the early '70s to the more sedate, but rich and confident, sounds of pop music for adults.Mojo (Publisher) (1/00, p.108) - "...[It] was the last time they sounded remotely abrasive....the singles shine, and 'Spin Me Round' is the kind of romantic nostalgia that Ferry excelled at..." Roxy Music Manifesto Songs Manifesto Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) A Roxy Classic There are a couple of throwaways on this CD........but.....Manifesto, Trash, Angel Eyes, Still Falls the Rain 4 song lead to this CD are pure genius. Manifesto itself overlooked for it's musical genius. Still Falls the Rain should be considered one of the bands best. Not sure why it is overlooked. This CD is for the Roxy Music purist. At Last, The TRUE "Original"... Though I was familiar with their earlier hits, MANIFESTO was my very first introduction to Roxy Music on a more intimate level, back when you could still hear an album in a record store that excited you so much, you would buy it on the spot.
Sometime later, when the first remastered version was released, Bryan Ferry and Co. gave a nod to the disco craze, with a gawd-awful remix of "Angel Eyes," and an equally horrid video to match. Thankfully, the original version is restored here, which also brings back the integrity of the "Side One" cuts, from the shimmering dissonance of the opening title cut, to the haunting "Stronger Through the Years." The "Side Two" cuts don't have the same flow, though "Spin Me Round" and "Dance Away" have always been stand-outs.
All-in-all, a must-have for RM fans and lovers of brilliantly realized Eighties "art-rock." Submitted by dcscribe (Arlington, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Still Going Strong Roxy Music still had it on this first "reunion" album. It's every bit as good as their "classics" Siren, Country Life, etc. Almost every song makes you want to get up and dance . . . or at least sing along -- especially the title track, Trash, My Little Girl, Angel Eyes. Even the mellower Dance Away is wonderful, but it serves as a harbinger of the dreck that would follow a couple albums later. Submitted by a reviewer (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York and American Recording Studios, Woodland Hills, California. All songs written or co-written by members of Texas except "Tired Of Being Alone" (Al Green). Texas sound a bit like a countrified version of the Pretenders put through a car wash on Ricks Road, to the point where the music is so clean, one's mind just slips around and off of it. There's a squeaky-clean polish to "So Called Friend," a stab at southern twang that doesn't seem genuine...it's a sound best left in a studio and indicative of a band trying too hard to make a hit song. There are simply too many studio effects and fake sounding instruments throughout the album. One imagines the harmonica to be some sort of Casio creation. It's like listening to Cher doing a Dusty Springfield impersonation. "Fade Away" tries so hard to have an aggressive ...

Manifesto
$8.39 Bringing non-stop rocknroll to all corners of the U.S. is what Athens, Ohio's Geraldine lives for. They have been touring extensively for the last two years; playing anywhere and everywhere that real, raw rock is appreciated. Every trashy rocknroll-hell hole in the country-from dive bars to strip clubs to roadhouses of every kind- has probably played host to Geraldine at one time or another. The band also makes regular stops in Mexico proving their brand of bluesy punknroll can get a crowd moving regardless of native language.Geraldine's ...
