By using a wide range of influences and styles, singer/songwriter Ben Harper manages to create a harmonious gem with BURN TO SHINE. Fans of Harper will not be thrown off by his dynamic versatility. In fact, new listeners will be drawn to the buffet of moods and emotions. "Steal My Kisses" is an up-tempo folk track that features a bit of human beat-boxing underneath. Harper's soft ballad voice shines bright on "Beloved One." Other tracks to check out are "Alone" and "The Woman in You," which both show off the tender side of Harper's songwriting. If you looking to rock outright, check out the title cut and "Forgiven."

Unknown Contributor Role: Real Time Jazz Band.Spin (11/99, p.193) - 7 out of 10 - "...His delivery becomes its own kind of theater: It's the sound of someone desperate enough to scream - for blood, for truth, for anything that's real. It's those transformations...that light up Harper's dauntingly eclectic fourth effort..." Q (11/99, p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...On a song called 'Forgiven' he uses his muscle in surging bursts, counterpointing quiet acoustic verses to catch the turmoil of his preoccupation with earthly wickedness and divine grace..." Mojo (Publisher) (10/99, p.120) - "...the hoarse entreaties, the uncoiling curls of slide guitar, the religiose imagery, the smouldering verses bursting into flaming choruses - [are] all present on [BURN], along with several new features that suggest the guitarist's trying to broaden his stylistic palette." | | Ben Harper Diamonds On The Inside CD (2003)
Burn To Shine album
$11.35 In the three years-plus interim between this and his last studio album, Ben Harper traversed the world, and the already introspective singer/songwriter has clearly done even more soul-searching and emerged with his most earnest (and that's no mean feat), focused set to date. DIAMONDS ON THE INSIDE flows organically with that transcendent feeling exemplfied by lines so simple and revealing as "can you look into my eyes, or has your heart gone blind," which harbor the ability to subtly wend their way into the subconscious and the heart simultaneously.
Harper's gathered his acclaim via trenchant lyricism and his knack for adeptly and sincerely blending many styles into a ...
| | Mongo Santamaria Mongo's Way/Up From The Roots CD (1999)
Burn To Shine CD music
$10.69 With the exception of a soulful reading of the Box Tops' "The Letter," Mongo's Way abandons the pop covers that dominated Mongo Santamaria's late-'60s dates for Columbia in favor of a more far-reaching Latin jazz sensibility shaped by elements of soul, funk and rock. Working with producer Neal Creque, as well as a superior supporting cast featuring guitarist Eric Gale, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Santamaria creates some of his most atmospheric and eclectic music, similar in spirit and scope to the myriad blaxploitation soundtracks jamming retail bins but executed with uncommon artistry. This two-fer reissue also features Up from the Roots, an exploration of the African origins of Caribbean music that prompts Santamaria to set aside his trademark conga drums in favor of traditional African percussion instruments. The LP features some of his most potent and artful playing, capturing the rhythms and textures ...

| | ABC Beauty Stab CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Burn To Shine songs
$8.79 The difference between Beauty Stab's chart statistics in the U.K. and in the U.S. is extremely contrasting. The album's only single, "That Was Then and This Is Now," reached number 18 in the U.K., while it stalled at number 89 in the United States. The album itself climbed to number 12 on ABC's side of the ocean, while it stalled at number 69 on the American charts. The reason that Beauty Stab made such a substantial impact in the U.K. was due mainly to the album's makeshift concept about the band's take on modern England, with Martin Fry and Mark White trying to push their opinions through the buzz of guitars rather than the ...
