The work of European composer Karl Jenkins, the Adiemus debut SONGS OF SANCTUARY is one of those late 20th century musical triumphs whose success came, oddly enough, through a Delta Airlines TV commercial in which the track "Adiemus" was featured. The exposure resulted in hefty sales for this initial Adiemus collection and ensured further releases.
The music is grounded in Western classical structure but features a vocal technique drawn from Africa and executed exuberantly by a chorus of young children as well as the South African singer Miriam Stockley. Aside from the occasional line of Latin, there are few lyrics. Rather, the vocalists recite phonetic sounds, resulting in an album that can be understood and appreciated by many.
Recorded at Angel Recording Studios, Islington, London.
Personnel: Karl Jenkins (conductor); Miriam Stockley (vocals); Robert St. John Wright (concertmaster); Pamela Thorby (recorder); Mike Taylor (quena); Frank Ricotti, Jody Barratt Jenkins (percussion); Mary Carewe (background vocals); The London Philharmonic.

PLAY IT AGAIN! This is one of those CDs that, as soon as you listen to it (the very first time), you want to play it again, but you are afraid to because you don't want to play it too often and get tired of listening to it! What I mean is ---
It grabbed me from note #1 and held me until the end. Between the "tribal" rhythms and the Neo-Baroque sequences that take occasional unexpected turns, I was rapt throughout. Just in case that sounded pretentious...BUY THIS CD! I promise that you will LOVE it! Also, buy the Adiemus 2 cd! It is excellent, also!! Cheers!!! Some of the most moving yet relaxing music ever There are no words to describe this CD. It's absolutely beautiful music that moves your soul and relaxes your spirit - very unique. There's nothing like it, except possibly Enya's Sail Away. We've had it for years and love it anytime of the day. But, my son loves it at bedtime. I just wish I could find the lyrics to the first track at least. I'm tired of just mouthing nonsense words. Submitted by a reviewer (Jackson, MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.99 Born in 1928 in Bordeaux into a musical family, his mother being the renown harpist and musician Micheline Kahn, Jean-Michel Damase showed precocious musical talent. His studies began at an early age: when he was five he began to attend the Samuel-Rousseau courses in piano and solfège. When he was twelve, he became a pupil of Cortot at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, and in the next year he joined Armand Ferté’s piano classes at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1943, he was unanimously awarded the Premier Prix in piano at the Conservatoire. Two years later he entered Busser's composition classes and began to study harmony and counterpoint with Dupré. At nineteen, he won the first prize in composition with his Quintet and his cantata “Et la Belle se reveille” (And Beauty Awakened) won him the Prix de Rome. Damase's youthful compositional maturity helped to foster a considerable technical facility and he has produced a great deal of music in a style that is attractive and elegant, remaining close to the traditions of the Conservatoire. All his works show deep knowledge of the possibilities of instruments, and his orchestration is rich, full and varied; evidenced most notably in the chamber and concertante works. He is also great lover of ballet and a close friend of several leading choreographers. His first ballet score was “La Croqueuse de diamants” (The Diamond Cruncher) ...
