One of Tangerine Dream's earliest and most classic recordings, STRATOSFEAR's Mellotron-soaked melodies have not only found their way into samplers and DJ repertoires worldwide--the band have also even revisited the album's plangent themes in their successive soundtrack compositions, such as RISKY BUSINESS. In 1976, the band (Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann) was still creating music as imagistic, fantastic and phantasmagorical as its accompanying track titles ("The Big Sleep in Search of Hades," "3 AM At the Border of the Marsh from Okefenokee").
The vast washes of Moog, Mellotron, rhythm computers, and Fender Rhodes piano that grace "3 AM" still sound like they originated from the seventh circle of Hell. Their sheer alien-ness seems to bespeak music made not of this earth. The title track's hovering, extraterrestrial sequencer hypno-pulse continues to resonate in today's electronica.

| | Tangerine Dream Ricochet CD (1975)
Stratosfear
$9.45 The live RICOCHET (sporting one of Monique Froese's more enigmatic and abstract covers) remains a high water mark amongst Tangerine Dream's vast in-concert recordings. During their notorious mid-'70s live performances, they were for a time considered to be the loudest band ever--it's not hard to imagine the effect on the inner ear canals of this album's bubbling sequencers played at jet-plane volume. This is still classic electronic music.
RICOCHET is divided into two parts, which ...
| | Tangerine Dream Phaedra CD (1974)
Stratosfear
$8.85 The title track is an almost spooky exercise in synth/sequencer tension and dynamics: while eerie atmospheres of Mellotron go head to head with spiraling Moogs, dense, humming sequencer webs percolate along the surface, motile and mobile. The album's closer, "Sequent C," leaves the listener breathless, as black electronic clouds form and dissipate and the surrounding space becomes corporeal sound. PHAEDRA remains one of the seminal recordings ...
| | Tangerine Dream Rubycon CD (1975)
Stratosfear
$8.85 RUBYCON is an undisputed classic in the vast Tangerine Dream canon, referenced by many of the new electronica generation. But at the time of its creation, Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann were themselves young men experimenting with technology.
RUBYCON is split into two sections, both of which offer the band's trademark mix of ululating sequencers, ghostly synthetic twilight, and mysterious electronic effects. Part One begins with intergalactic whispers, before coalescing into one of the Dream's most uniquely designed rhythm patterns. Part Two moves the sequencers' BPMs ...
| | Tangerine Dream Exit CD (1981)
Stratosfear
$7.59 Exit marks the beginning of a new phase in Tangerine Dream's music: Gone were the side-long, sequencer-led journeys, replaced by topical pieces that were more self-contained in scope, more contemporary in sound. Johannes Schmoelling's influence is really felt for the first time here; Tangram, for all its crispness and melody, was simply a refinement of Force Majeure's principles, and the soundtrack to Thief not an album proper. On Exit, listeners are introduced to electronic music's next generation, notably on "Choronzon" and "Network 23," which brought the sound of the dancefloor into the mix (it hasn't left since). That's not to suggest that Tangerine Dream has stopped creating eerie, evocative music; both "Pilots of Purple Twilight" and the stately "Exit" will feel familiar to ...

| | Mighty Keepers It's A Keeper CD (2003)
Stratosfear
$16.45 What can we say? Yes, it's classic Guitar Rock, played by the fully grown, but considering we didn't stop exploring the musical landscape after 1979, it's not out of step with the times. There's a slight hint of Country Rock influence. Y'all remember what that term means? Acoustic instruments will compete to be heard in the mix here and there, like in, for instance, "Bad Reaction", and there's some pleasant harmonies sprinkled ...
| | Griffith Struggle Never Dies! CD (2008)
Stratosfear
$16.45 Four reviews of The Struggle Never Dies CDWithout a doubt, Miles Griffith has a unique, incomparable voice in jazz. The man not only sings, but he groans, uses breathtaking phrases, discharges strange guttural sounds and produces sounds like a trumpet. Miles Griffith and his congenial Italian colleagues Tony Pancella (p), Aldo Vigorito (b) and Pietro Iodice (dm) are spinning a net, in which they catch all emotional aspects of improvised music. A wonderful composition is the “Child morning scat” with the merry scat dialogues between Miles and some children.Andreas Geyer, JAZZPODIUMI love the CD The day that I received it. My favorite tunes are #1, #3, #5, #8, #9, and #10. #4 Is a great love song. The musicians sound great, especially the bassist and drummer on the tune Lonely Moments. Miles Griffith’s new release, “The Struggle Never Dies!!” is an impressive musical work of art. It emits several emotions from its listener. His vocal styling, although reminiscent of King Pleasure, Betty Carter and James Brown, has his inimitable signature. Ellen Carter WPFW Washington DC Jazz Radio DJListening to Miles Griffith on "The Struggle Never Dies" is like watching a trapeze artist work without a net: You almost cannot turn away from his audacious vocal flight through “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” for example, which bounds through the familiar melody with such daring that your ears half expect the arrangement to detonate then plummet, yet somehow it lands safely. Griffith’s phrasing displays obvious jazz chops – poignant Andy Bey ballad harmonics ...
