Personnel: Iggy Pop (vocals); Carlos Alomar, Ricky Gardiner (guitar); David Bowie (piano); Tony Sales (bass); Hunt Sales (drums). Recorded at Hansa Tonstusios, Berlin, Germany. On The Idiot, Iggy Pop looked deep inside himself, trying to figure out how his life and his art had gone wrong in the past. But on Lust for Life, released less than a year later, Iggy decided it was time to kick up his heels, as he traded in the mid-tempo introspection of his first album and began rocking hard again. Musically, Lust for Life is a more aggressive set than The Idiot, largely thanks to drummer Hunt Sales and his bassist brother Tony Sales. The Sales' proved they were a world class rhythm section, laying out power and spirit on the rollicking title cut, the tough groove of "Tonight," and the lean neo-punk assault of "Neighborhood Threat," and with guitarists Ricky Gardner and Carlos Alomar at their side, they made for a tough, wiry rock & roll band -- a far cry from the primal stomp of the Stooges, but capable of kicking Iggy back into high gear. (David Bowie played piano and produced, as he had on The Idiot, but his presence is less clearly felt on this album.) As a lyricist and vocalist, Iggy Pop rose to the challenge of the material; if he was still obsessed with drugs ("Tonight"), decadence ("The Passenger"), and bad decisions ("Some Weird Sin"), the title cut suggested he could avoid a few of the temptations that crossed his path, and songs like "Success" displayed a cocky joy that confirmed Iggy was back at full strength. On Lust for Life, Iggy Pop managed to channel the aggressive power of his work with the Stooges with the intelligence and perception of The Idiot, and the result was the best of both worlds; smart, funny, edgy, and hard-rocking, Lust for Life is the best album of Iggy Pop's solo career. ~ Mark Deming Iggy and Bowie at the height of their respective powers presented a formidable artistic engine, and Lust For Life sees them working up a full head of steam. Two songs will need little introduction - 'Lust For Life' and 'The Passenger' are as intrinsic to the tapestry of 70s rock music as sundry Beatles efforts were to the previous decade (their influence on 90s film soundtracks is a testament to their durability). Those monolithic jukebox favourites aside, listeners may also find space in their hearts for the swaggering 'Neighbourhood Threat' (shades of the Stooges, without the musical clatter) and the disquieting 'Turn Blue', written from the viewpoint of an overdosing junkie.NME (Magazine) (9/18/93, p.19) - Ranked #18 among The Greatest Albums Of The '70s. NME (Magazine) (10/2/93, p.29) - Ranked #47 in NME's list of the 'Greatest Albums Of All Time.' Fall In Love With The Ig..... After the sorrowful aura that surrounded "The Idiot", this next album is the direct opposite. It is uplifting, funny and above all memorable. Pop/Bowie had reached a creative zenith with this set. I have owned a copy for thirty years, and still sounds as glorious as it did on its' initial release. Every track is magnificent, whether it is the rampaging "Lust For Life" which was used in the iconic opening moments of the film "Trainspotting" or
"Success" with its' amusing call and response chorus of " I'm gonna hop like a frog !" How many performers would dare to sing a lyric like that ? Then again, who would have a song about wanting to be a dog ? As for "The Passenger", it can still pack a dance floor in the 21st Century. Easily the best tribute to Jim Morrison, Pop's vocal is simply magnificent and along with "Gimme Danger", one of his finest songs. Interesting to note, it is the one track he did not write with DB.
However, it is the last track which is the most neglected Pop/Bowie gem, "Fall In Love With Me". Why has this song not been covered by other artists ? Perhaps The Artic Monkeys should check it out. I also agree with other comments below as to why there aren't more reviews of this seminal album.... Submitted by Robert. MJ (Hertfordshire, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Iggy Rocks! I also am suprised to not see MANY reviews here. Iggy kicks ass. The Godfather of punk. He was as vital to rock and roll as the Beatles, Stones, and Zeppelin and probably inspired more rock artists than any of them. "Lust For Life" and "The Passenger" are rock classics still played and loved 25 years later. Sixteen, Neighborhood Threat, and Some Weird Sin are great as well. A Rock Icon who influenced even the biggest rock gods like Bowie, who admired Iggy so much he wanted to play with him even just as a side musician (piano, sax) and cover his tune's (China Girl). Even has Soupy Sales' son's for a rhythm section (who later joined Bowie to form Tin Machine in the 90's). The Stooges were Iggy at his best, but his solo career was right up there as well...better than 98% of the crap you here on the radio. Lust For Life
$8.85 Personnel includes: Iggy Pop (vocals); David Bowie (keyboards). Recorded at Chateau D'Herouville and Hansa Studios, Berlin, Germany. In 1976, the Stooges had been gone for two years, and Iggy Pop had developed a notorious reputation as one of rock & roll's most spectacular waste cases. After a self-imposed stay in a mental hospital, a significantly more functional Iggy was desperate to prove he could hold down a career in music, and he was given another chance by his longtime ally, David Bowie. Bowie co-wrote a batch of new songs with Iggy, put together a band, and produced The Idiot, which took Iggy in a new direction decidedly different from the guitar-fueled proto-punk of the Stooges. Musically, The Idiot is of a piece with the impressionistic music of Bowie's "Berlin Period" (such as Heroes and Low), with it's fragmented guitar figures, ominous basslines, and discordant, high-relief keyboard parts. Iggy's new music was cerebral and inward-looking, where his early work had been a glorious call to the id, and Iggy was in more subdued form than with the Stooges, with ...

| | Stooges CD (1969)
Lust For Life
$10.15 The Stooges: Iggy Stooge (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar); Dave Alexander (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Additional personnel: John Cale (violin). Includes liner notes by Danny Fields. Personnel: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (vocals, guitar); John Cale (viola); Scott Asheton (drums). Liner Note Author: Danny Fields . Recording information: Eltra Studios, NY. Photographer: Joel Brodsky. While the Stooges had a few obvious points of influence -- the swagger of the early Rolling Stones, the horny pound of the Troggs, the fuzztone sneer of a thousand teenage garage bands, and the Velvet Underground's experimental eagerness to leap into the void -- they didn't really sound like anyone else around when their first album hit the streets in 1969. It's hard to say if Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, Dave Alexander, and the man then known as Iggy Stooge were capable of making anything more sophisticated than this, but if they were, they weren't ...
