In 1991, Australia's Divinyls generated some controversy in the U.S. when lead singer Chrissie Amphlett sang about female masturbation on "I Touch Myself." Far from explicit, the PG-rated hit shouldn't have come as such a shock to American ears. At any rate, this self-titled CD offers exactly what one generally expects from the Divinyls: rockin' intensity combined with new wave-ish quirks and a strong melodic sense. Though not mind-blowing, it's respectable and generally appealing. Hardcore Divinyls enthusiasts will find the eerie "Love School" and infectious offerings like "Make Out Alright," "Bless My Soul (It's Rock-N-Roll)," and "I Touch Myself" to be well worth acquiring. Desperate would be a better introduction to the Divinyls, but this is a release with many more strengths than weaknesses. ~ Alex Henderson

The Divinyls: Christina Amphlett (vocals); Mark McEntee (guitar); Rick Grossman (bass).

Rolling Stone (3/27/91) - 3.5 Stars - Very good "...the most sexually charged voice from a female since the emergence of Chrissie Hynde."
Musician (4/91) - "...a solid record on every score: great songs, good production, and, most importantly, Amphlett's voice is front and center throughout."

4 stars self-titled diVINYLS
diVINYLS; self-titled diVINYLS The 4th LP from Christina Amplest and Mark McEntee Produced by David Tickle. Once you get passed the novelty of “I Touch Myself” you will realize that there is a solid collection of songs on this CD. Straight forward, well crafted songs, still very relevant if you’d care to compare it to anything in the music scene today. It was the unique vocals and harmonies balanced with guitar is what prompted me to re-buy this CD and others from diVINYLS . One does not over power the other...just think of holding your lover's hand, its A LOT like that... *Sounds really good loud. Favorite songs “Make Out Alright”, “Love School”, “Bless My Soul (its rock and roll)” “Bullet” and of course “I Touch Myself”. I am hesitant to call it rock and roll and is not with in the New Wave time frame BUT diVINYLS is clearly a must have. enjoy!

4 stars A classic
What can be said only one singer has the voice to do just to "I touch Myself", which is a classic love song, and she is singing on this album. This is a solid album on all levels. I would give it 5 stars if the music wasn't so "Pop"

EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman. The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking up the subject of mortality more fully in the anthemic "Rise," written by Eitzel for an AIDS-stricken friend. Eitzel observes the trials of those around him on "Ex-Girlfriend," but "Sick of Food" turns his gaze inward, breathlessly describing his alienation from virtually everything and his simultaneous longing for connection. His disaffection grows more urgent on "The Dead Part of You," but by the closing folky ballad "Jesus' Hands," Eitzel's delivering a plea for redemption that finds him strangely at peace with contentment's evanescence. Recorded at Music Annex Studio A, Menlo Park, California, Soma Sync ...

The Divinyls were one of the most unfortunately overlooked acts of the 1980s, but the reason they didn't achieve much commercial success could be because an album like What A Life! is so inconsistent. The Divinyls' best strengths lie both in Christina Amphlett's unique vocal delivery, and guitarist Mark McEntee's bottom-heavy, grungy, guitar work, and not so much in their songwriting. The Divinyls always manage to come up with a few memorable songs, such as "Pleasure and Pain" (a thinly-veiled ode to sadomasochism), "Casual Encounter," and the ballad "Sleeping Beauty," but many of the album tracks are hardly memorable. "In My Life" is a catchy rocker, but Amphlett's vocals (which are usually the highlight of the band's music) sound banal and unpolished. Likewise, the album's closer, "Dear Diary," is a pretentious stab at art that instead sounds very flat and dull. What A Life! is a solid album for fans of the band, but there are better places to start for casual listeners. ~ Jason ...

Led by the amiable Noddy Holder and armed with a slew of intentionally misspelled song titles, Slade was one of the key groups in the 1970s U.K. glam movement. Whether settling into jaunty, piano-driven tunes ("Coz I Love You," "Look Wot You Dun") or running through amped-up guitar-heavy numbers ("Mama Weer All Crazee Now," "Cum on Feel ...

Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes a difference here is a boost in the overall energy level from unrelenting gloom to mostly sad, a slightly expanded sonic palette that makes room for field recordings and a wider range of drum sounds, and most importantly, some really good songs. Chief among them are the Beth Arzy-sung "Idyllwild" which, much like Helen Reddy on the last album, fairly bursts out of the speakers like sun through the clouds, "Darker, Colder, Slower," which has the kind dramatic shifts in dynamics and tone TBS Records need more of, the laid-back near-country rocker "The Tenth of Always," and the almost happy sounding "Say Goodbye to the Sea" (of course the words are devastatingly sad, but the drum program and the bells will have ...

The initial release from this Descendents offshoot finds All spouting off about the All philosophy featuring punk-pop odes to sexual abstinence, heartbreak, and, of course, Alfredo's, a real Mexican restaurant the band practically lived at (they were even nice enough to include the address and phone number). The entire album contains enough pop hooks to win over the most jaded listener; a few decades ago, the pop gems of Allroy Saves would have crackled out of AM radios ...
Stop Making Sense
Talking Heads Stop Making Sense CD  (1984) Special Edition; SDTK

Divinyls album
CD $10.49  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded live at The Pantages Theatre, Hollywood, California in December 1983. The Talking Heads concert film STOP MAKING SENSE, recorded at a 1983 Hollywood performance, brought audiences everywhere face to face with the very visual aesthetic of conceptual artiste David Byrne and his cohorts. Playing the part of performance artist, Byrne used elaborate visual gimmicks to enhance the themes of his songs for maximum visceral impact. Serendipitously, STOP MAKING SENSE captured the band at an artistic peak, as it consists mostly of material from the glorious funk-inspired albums REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES. Live, complemented by a phalanx of great auxiliary musicians, the Heads emphasize the funkier aspects of their jumpy art-dance concepts, and tunes like "Burning Down the House" and "Girlfriend is Better," already impressive in their studio versions, seem to jump off the album. When the soundtrack for the classic Talking Heads movie Stop Making Sense was originally issued in 1984, it was only nine tracks in length, even though a total of 16 were performed on film. So when the film was re-released in theaters and on home video in 1999, a new version of the soundtrack was issued as well, including all 16 songs and sporting an even better remastered sound. Recorded over three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre in December 1983 (during the tour in support of Speaking in Tongues), the usual four-piece lineup was supplemented by Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, guitarist Alex Weir, and backup singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt. Songs from all eras of the band are featured. The first four tracks are early selections ("Psycho Killer," "Heaven"), performed as bare renditions, plus full-band funky versions of such later hits as "Life During Wartime," "Burning Down the House," "Once in a Lifetime," and "Girlfriend Is Better." Also included are lesser-known album tracks ("Swamp," "This Must Be the Place," "Crosseyed and Painless"), plus a track from David Byrne's 1981 Catherine Wheel album ("What a Day That Was"), and "Genius of Love" by the Tom Tom Club (a side project of drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth). One of the greatest live albums ever, the 1999 version of Stop Making Sense captures the Talking Heads at the height of their powers. A quintessential purchase. ~ Greg Prato All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Jerry Harrison (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Alex Weir, David Byrne (vocals, guitar); Chris Frantz (vocals, drums); Tina ...
