The title tune became the anthem of Senegalese youth in 1990. This is the first album N'Dour hasn't re-recorded for the international market. It's very African and his best recorded work to date. ~ J. Poet
(percussion).

Spin (12/90) - "..his stunning, expressive, and passionate voice.. rightly continues to be the focal point of his music.." Entertainment Weekly - "...some of the canniest, most gripping music of the year." Ranked as the #3 Album of 1990. Q (2/91) - Recommended as one of the five best world music albums of 1990. "Exhilarating." Q - 4 Stars - Excellent "...reaches to the heart." Village Voice - "...everything is beautiful..." - Rating: A- Stereo Review (1/91) - Peformance "Explosive" / Recording "Very good" - "...packs a transcultural wallop. He remains true to the pop style of his native Senegal, rich with rhythm upon rhythm and delicate interweaving melodies, but he also explodes with the kind of kinetic power we expect from rock-and-roll...maybe someone should create a Nobel Prize for music and give it to N'Dour." Audio Magazine (1/91) - Sound A / Performance A "N'Dour's expressive tenor soars over songs." New York Times (Publisher) (12/30/90) - Rated #3 of the Top 10 Recordings for 1990 Set Review

$9.09 Reissued in 1993 with six fairly disposable bonus tracks, The Big Heat has Stan Ridgway's love of film noir and Jim Thompson-style stories splashed gaudily all over it. Curiously, though, the album is tremendous ...

| | Gun Club Miami CD (1982)
Set music CDs
$11.55 While the Gun Club's debut, FIRE OF LOVE, was a masterpiece of untamed punk blues, follow-up album MIAMI, produced by Blondie's Chris Stein, achieves a fuller sound and a more varied stylistic palette without sacrificing any of its predecessor's intensity. The revved-up blues of yore are still here ("Devil in the Woods," "Fire of Love"), but wild-child singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce and company also tackle ...
| | Brian Wilson Smile CD (2004)
Set songs
$16.19 Between 1967 and 2004, the SMILE sessions were pretty much the Dead Sea Scrolls of pop music. Well documented as head Beach Boy Brian Wilson's answer to the Beatles' masterpiece SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (which was itself largely an answer to the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), the tracks laid down in '67 for the projected SMILE album were the furthest afield anyone nominally operating under the pop/rock umbrella had ever ventured. Notoriously, intraband conflict (Mike Love, in particular, found the Wilson/Van Dyke Parks-penned conceptual work too far out) kept the record from being released. With several oceans' worth of water under the bridge, Wilson finally decided to finish the aborted project three-and-a-half decades later, adhering closely to the original blueprints. ...

| | Jennifer Cutting Ocean: Songs For The Night Sea Journey CD (2005)
Set CD music
$13.45 Jennifer Cutting isn't a huge name in the folk-rock world, but if Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey is any indication, the Washington, DC-based songwriter, arranger and producer is well worth getting to know -- especially if one fancies folk-rock with a strong British Isles influence. Cutting, in fact, has so many British, Irish and Celtic influences that one could easily assume she has from that part of the world. But Cutting is definitely an American; she just happens to have a major appreciation of British, Irish and Celtic folk -- and that British Isles influence asserts itself quite strongly on original material like "The Gladdest Breeze," "Call of the Siren" and "My Grief on the Sea" (all of which underscore the tranquil, pastoral nature of her work). There are a few songs on this CD that aren't entirely original; "If You Are Near," for example, combines a classical ...

| | You Came A Long Way From St. Louis: The Many Sides Of Chuck Berry CDs (2006)
Set songs
$13.95 The Universal U.K. 2006 double-disc set You Came a Long Way from St. Louis was designed as a companion piece to their 2006 comp Reelin' and Rockin': The Very Best of Chuck Berry, an excellent 56-track roundup of the Berry basics. Where that offered up the hits, this 31-track set digs much deeper, culling album tracks and singles that aren't often acknowledged as part of the canon, including many songs that haven't been in circulation on CD. There are a couple of ringers -- the original single of "Reelin' and Rockin'" is here because the previous collection had the live version; a few songs, like "Sweet Little Rock & Roller," "It's My Own Business," and "Thirteen Question Method," are too well circulated to be called offbeat -- but for the most part this is prime obscure Chuck Berry, and it's tremendous. What impresses is the range in the music and the depth in the writing, two things that are evident in his greatest hits but easier to appreciate here, when the songs are largely not as well-known and sharply presented. This doesn't follow a strict chronological order and that's a blessing, as the mix and match between different eras of his classic Chess recordings provide a greater idea of the scope of his music -- or how it's put in the subtitle: The Many Sides of Chuck Berry. Of course, there's plenty of high-octane rock & roll here -- songs that have been covered by other rockers, like "It's My Own Business"; "It Wasn't Me," which Chuck covered later himself; "Big Ben," a tremendous spin on "School Days" concerning a too-loud alarm clock; and "My Mustang Ford," one of his classic car tunes -- but this also emphasizes his blues roots, evident in both the slow-burning "I've Changed" and the Nat King Cole shuffle of "Route 66." These, of course, are expected -- rock & roll and blues can be heard on all the Berry compilations -- but what's unexpected is the jazzy groove of "Right Off Rampart Street," the Hawaiian blues instrumental "Mad Lad," the mellow hipster rap of "A Deuce," the campy stuttering "Broken Arrow" (reminiscent of an early-'60s Bo Diddley cut), the sly shuffle of "You Came a Long Way from St. Louis," the electric piano uptown dance beats of "Club ...
