In the late 1980s and early '90s, before his fall from the coconut tree, but after the (arguable) decline of the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards released a spate of hot albums with and without his band the X-Pensive Winos. This '91 outing captures a particularly crisp show, and was released as an answer and antidote to the badly-recorded live X-Pensive Winos bootlegs that Richards was displeased to discover. Richards' guitar-playing is in fine form, and his endearingly laconic vocals don't disappoint, but the highlight of the album is a take of the old Stones chestnut "Time is on My Side," rendered passionately by vocalist Sarah Dash, a former Patti LaBelle backing singer.
X-Pensive Winos: Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Waddy Wachtel (guitar), Steve Jordan (drums), Charley Drayton (bass), Ivan Neville (keyboards), Sarah Dash (vocals), Bobby Keys (sax).
Producers: Steve Jordan, Don Smith, Keith Richards.
Keith Richards: Ivan Neville, Sarah Dash, Steve Jordan , Waddy Wachtel, Bobby Keys, Charley Drayton.Rolling Stone (1/9/92, p.51) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good "..every player contributes, and the mesh is often magnificent.." Spin (1/92, p.79) - Highly Recommended "..he's eased gracefully into middle age without losing his knack for trashy rock'n'roll...consistently heartfelt.." $18.99 "Yawl Ain't Ready"For the Newest Ray'mond HitAfter bobbing our heads to a virtual "praise party" in 2004 with his Underground Project , Gospel's hip-hop prophet, Ray'mond, has returned with a vengeance, determined to speak Words the Pen Didn't Write to the hearts and minds of God's people. Pounding with eclecticism, The Words the Pen Didn't Write (Released Oct. 30, 2005) shifts the gospel paradigm. The Nashville native fuses a blend of cultural, musical, and instrumental styles in a way few artists can. He derives his influence from such gospel artist as Tonex, Fred Hammond, Lamar Campbell, and even secular artist such as Anthony Hamilton. In fact, this project probably would not be here today if it were not for Hamilton. Ray'mond admires Hamilton ...
