On the surface, THAT WHAT IS NOT is a fairly straightforward "alternative" rock album with some heavy-metal guitar licks added for flavor. It is, however, an aptly named record, featuring John Lydon's patented rants on such topics as drug abuse, governmental abuse of power, and religion.
"Acid Drops," the album's first track, is a relentless, chugging rocker that ends on a crunching sample from the classic Sex Pistols track, "God Save the Queen." "Luck's Up," a preachy anti-drug tract, is rescued by swirls of guitar and an oddly catchy, shouted chorus. Opening on a simple bass and drum line, "God" is the album's standout track, a sarcastic dissection of those who use religion for personal gain. And what PIL record would be complete without an upbraiding from Lydon directed at the critics who willfully misinterpret him? "Think Tank" meets this task on THAT WHAT IS NOT. "Good Things," which ends the album, adds a horn section and soaring, female backing vocals. Barring the expressly political lyrics, Lydon's extremely distinctive warbling, and the odd naughty word, it wouldn't be out of place on Top-40 radio stations.

That What Is Not
$8.39 2 LPs on 1 CD. Originally issued on vinyl as THE METAL BOX in England (or 2ND EDITION in the U.S.).
METAL BOX, PIL's second album, arrived in stores in 1979, packaged in a metal can modeled after a film canister. The expensive album, slightly re-sequenced and refitted with a traditional sleeve, was re-released the following year as SECOND EDITION. The 11-minute "Albatross" opens the proceedings, centered upon powerful bass punctuated by spiky guitars.
"Poptones" brings Lydon's vocals to the forefront of the mix as he delivers an elliptical lyric about ...
| | Todd Rundgren Runt CD (1970)
That What Is Not
$7.59 Todd Rundgren's first solo album after the breakup of his '60s band the Nazz originally didn't even feature his name on the cover; despite Rundgren being the only person pictured on the sleeve, it was treated as the self-titled debut of the "band" Runt. (This also explains the confusing title of the second Runt/Rundgren album, RUNT: THE BALLAD OF TODD RUNDGREN.)
RUNT contains at least two spectacular songs, the soulful piano-rock hit "We Gotta Get You ...

That What Is Not
$10.35 The LP version of this release was called ALBUM. The cassette version was called CASSETTE.
Public Image Limited's eighth album takes no prisoners, opening with crunching chords and John Lydon's snarling in "FFF." Released in a generic blue-and-white sleeve--each format titled accordingly--this is arguably PIL's most consistently successful album. "Rise" is an amazing piece of work and a high point in the band's career. Lydon's lyrics about torture in South Africa afford him the opportunity to use all of his vocal tricks--from his patented warble to angry shouting. He even sings(!) on the great chorus. The musical backing highlights big-beat drumming, ringing guitar, and ...
| | Public Image Ltd Flowers Of Romance CD (1981)
That What Is Not
$8.85 The fourth Public Image Limited album is something of a milestone. Spread across its 33 minutes is some of the harshest and least "user-friendly" music ever recorded for a major record company. FLOWERS, the first album following the departure of the band's initial bass player, finds John Lydon largely abandoning guitars in the construction of his songs. The music is mainly comprised of jerking, off-kilter drumming, layered with creepy keyboard effects.
Echoing, buried backing vocals add menace to his uniformly disturbing lyrics. The tone of "Spread her body all naked and silly, a bulbous heap batting her eyelids" ("Track 8") and "What do you want, you're ...

That What Is Not
$11.79 LIVE IN TOKYO (1983), the second live Public Image Limited album in three years, presents the listener with a different side of the band. The PIL captured here is very energetic. Even more surpisingly, John Lydon seems interested in having the audience like him. After castigating Christianity in "Religion," he goes so far as to greet his audience--in Japanese!
Clearly ...

$13.15 On 2007's DON'T TELL COLUMBUS, his third album for the Bloodshot label, Graham Parker continues the remarkable streak of records that he began on '04's YOUR COUNTRY. | | Wet Animal CD (2005)
That What Is Not
$11.39 Although it's pretty clear cut which leading "stoner metal" acts lead the '70s and '90s (Black Sabbath and Kyuss, respectively), it's not as easy to pinpoint a leader of the pack from the '80s. But for many, Trouble would certainly be in consideration. Despite issuing some of the genre's most classic albums (namely ...
