There are promising moments on the Wallflowers' eponymous debut album, enough to suggest that the group was capable of the lean, contemporary folk-rock that would make Bringing Down the Horse such a winning record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The Wallflowers' eponymous debut album is a little too studied and underwritten to make much of an impression, yet there are enough promising moments to suggest that the group was capable of the lean, contemporary folk-rock that made Bringing Down the Horse such a winning record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Wallflowers album
$11.39 "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song.
On URBAN HYMNS The Verve continues to widen the creative spectrum of psychedelic Britrock. The Verve exhibits a great deal of musical depth as they blanket "Bitter Sweet Symphony" with a full string section, employ acoustic guitars to evoke the simple, Carpenters-ish sentiments of "Sonnet" and "The Drugs Don't Work," and utilize heavily processed guitars on "Weeping Willow." Whether exploring the loud or soft extremes of their dynamic range, the band aspires to classic songwriting, tastefully incorporating retro sensibilities with ...

Wallflowers CD music
$10.59 "6th Avenue Heartache" was nominated for 1997 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "One Headlight" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "The Difference" was nominated and "One Headlight" won the 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Song.
On BRINGING DOWN THE HORSE, The Wallflowers refine their roots-rock and bring their considerable talents into focus. Now it's clear what distinguishes them from the rest of the roots-rock pack, and it's not just their convincing vintage musical chops. Singer/songwriter Jakob Dylan (son of Bob) has developed a knack for elliptical, imagistic lyrics that still convey urgent emotions. The intriguing collection of songs Dylan wrote for BRINGING DOWN THE HORSE catalogs the disillusionment and frustration he sees in himself and around him.
Adam Duritz, Michael Penn and Sam Phillips are among a star-studded group of guests here, but their contributions are tastefully understated, never distracting the listener from the band's signature sound. One of the most distinctive pieces of that sound is the organ work of Rami Jaffee, whose style combines elements of Charles Hodges' playing for Al Green with Al Kooper's seminal work with Jakob Dylan's dad. T-Bone Burnett's sympathetic production ...
| | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Wallflowers music CDs
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Wallflowers songs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Wallflowers album
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Wallflowers CD music
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful ...

| | Hong Kong Silicon Orchestra Flash Flood At Sunset CD (2007)
Wallflowers songs
$15.15 About The Hong Kong Silicon OrchestraThe Silicon Orchestra was the result of a remarkable musical collaboration between two very different musicians, Robert Stone and Gordon Mathews. They met in Hong Kong in the mid 1990s, discovering an instant rapport, each bringing a unique set of skills and influences to their subsequent recording projects.Mathews, an American, had played the trumpet as a child but had switched to flute and saxophone by the time he was in his teens. He found his way into the New York free jazz scene in the late 1970s and for a couple of years played screeching progressive jazz for audiences of 5 or 6 people, an experience that convinced him he'd starve to death if he made such music his life.He quest led him to Japan where he studied Shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, eventually earning a teaching license and performing in concerts of traditional Japanese music, a feat few foreigners have achieved. He also formed a band with Japanese jazz musicians that performed around the northern island of Hokkaido throughout the early and mid-1980s.Stone, on the other hand, had paid his dues in a more conventional context. Beginning with the guitar as a youngster growing up near Toronto in Canada, heād soon also picked up bass and piano. As early as the final years of high school, he was earning a part-time living in weekend dance bands and eventually became a versatile sideman, backing singers like the revered Canadian folksinger, the late Stan Rogers and the American anti-war icon, Jerry Jeff Walker. He also worked in put-together backing bands for touring notables, like Chicago blues singers, regional ...
