The first Verve album, A STORM IN HEAVEN, was released in 1993, prior to some legal wrangling necessitating the addition of the definite article to the band's name. Appearing in the wake of the commercial success of the "shoegazer" trend in England, it successfully bridged the gap between the rock affectations of Ride's spectacular GOING BLANK AGAIN and Spiritualized's debut album, both early shoegazing cornerstones.
Building on the spaciousness of their first few singles, A STORM IN HEAVEN marries the Verve's psychedelic leanings to the sonic whirlwind of Nick McCabe's guitar heroics. Highlights include "The Sun, the Sea," which is peppered with massive, crunching rock sounds, even featuring some hyperactive horns toward the end. "Virtual World," with the addition of flutes to the mix, conjures Jethro Tull caught in an elaborate crystalline guitar sound sculpture. The real winner here, though, is the majestic and enveloping "See You In the Next One (Have a Good Time)," which tones down much of the histrionics that precede it in favor of a dramatic acoustic sound with echoing vocals and McCabe's understated piano.

Storm In Heaven album
$5.95 This EP, which was released just prior to the Verve's debut album A STORM IN HEAVEN, combines five tracks from band's first three UK singles, "All In The Mind," "She's a Superstar," and "Gravity Grave." Over the course of these singles, the band charted a course that explored the territory between spacey neo-psychedelia and full-on, searing rock and roll--often, as with the muscular ebb and flow of "She's a Superstar," within the same song.
"Gravity Grave" uses Simon ...

On URBAN HYMNS The Verve continues to widen the creative spectrum of psychedelic Britrock. Imagine J. Mascis without the angst. Imagine the Velvets' "Sweet Jane" played on an antique turntable stuck on 16 rpm. This is the sound of Galaxie 500. Many other bands have appeared in their wake to continue the band's style of soft-spoken minimalist guitar-gloom, including Belle and Sebastian, and the Magnetic Fields. Galaxie 500's career was a short one, and most of their fans have come to love the band posthumously. THE PORTABLE GALAXIE 500 samples the best of three ...
| | Joe Sample Old Places, Old Faces CD (1995)
Storm In Heaven music CDs
$6.09 The former Crusader acquits himself admirably on these ten original compositions. Much of OLD PLACES finds Sample settling comfortably into the niche he knows best: laid-back, West Coast groove-jazz. Sample is such a master of the style, though, that the tunes never sound tired or stale. He has the uncommon ability to suggest kinetic energy without relinquishing his easy, in-the-pocket feel.
Sample's accomplices in rhythm, ...
