This "compilation" of various Stearns-songs composed for film and IMAX soundtracks between 1983 and 1993 reveals the many facets of his compositional abilities. Stearns is one of the more earnest practitioners of modern space music. His long, suspended electronic chords convey an impending sense of awe and livid drama. This is music that helps to bridge the gulf between post-Eno ambient and tepid New Age mysticism.
A good number of the tracks on SACRED SITE work fairly rudimentary drones and tones to good effect. Stearns' collaborations with Steve Roach have born enough mental fruit that Stearns elected to dabble in his own ancient modes of shamanism. It's in a different vein, cloaked in sheets of techno ambiguity, but it works. And on the 11+ minute "Return," the overall effect is downright cathartic. Space music composer Michael Stearns also composes for large-screen IMAX movie documentaries. The Lost World is so massive it could easily fill the theater, even without the movie. The lost world of the title refers to the towering rock pillar and cliffs and the thick tropical rain forest of Mount Roraima in Venezuela. The area was so mysterious and so full of adventure that in 1912 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote an adventure novel, a book that captivated Stearns as a boy. Stearns traveled by jeep, river, and foot to explore the region, returning with spectacular images and sound samples for this Cinemascope movie for the mind. The music is vast, immense, with drums as loud as dinosaur footsteps, organ drones as thick as impenetrable cliffs, and gongs as tall as the mountain's thousand-foot waterfall. Of course, the little band of explorers is overwhelmed and outnumbered by the territory and its legends. When the rights to Mike Oldfield's classic 1973 album returned to him in 2008, he decided to reissue the piece in an expanded form. This 2009 release features a stereo remix and some other bonus material. The work itself still astounds, a densely layered, richly textured tapestry of sound that put "minimalist" musical ideas in a pop music context, and also presaged New Age instrumentals. Years later, the album still holds up, unveiling hidden, layered delights with each listen.
The 19-year old Mike Oldfield played virtually everything on the mostly instrumental TUBULAR BELLS. Employing fugue-like classical patterns and wildly eclectic instrumentation, which included the flageolet, the mandolin, and the Farfisa organ, Oldfield created an intricately shifting web of musical phrases that overlapped and interlocked to generate a seemingly endless variety of textures. Oldfield achieved this effect, in large part, by overdubbing hundreds of times during the recording process (Rolling Stone magazine quoted the number of overdubs at 2300).
