Steve Roach rounds out the final part of this wonderful triptych, here collaborating with fellow space music maven Michael Stearns and Native American musician Ron Sunsinger. As ominous electronic spirals unwind and writhe behind the disc's eerie chants and naturally realized sounds, it derives its latent power from, and heartily champions, the desert's ceremonial legacy. All three musicians have trodden down these paths before, but, as on "Mother Ayahuasca," the addition of pulsating analog blips and mutated whistles lends just the right degree of strangeness that both contradicts the sacred charms of the unfolding compositions, yet is most integral to their development. Though it's difficult to say which of the three participants are responsible for the disc's broad textural hues, ultimately the merging of sensibilities, concepts, and direction makes KIVA quite the compelling listen.

$11.39 Parsons has found his work appended to the Californian "New Age" movements of the '80s that also inextricably (and unfortunately) linked such folks as Steve Roach and Eberhard Schoener. Forgetting that Parsons is a native New Zealander, and that Schoener is German, the only thing these artists have in common- aside from numerous stylistic similarities-is ...

Kiva
$14.65 On this CD's insert, "soma" is defined as a drink that could help one achieve empathy with the gods. SOMA, the musical document, might be that missing link between earth and the heavens. While STRATA, the first collaboration between Steve Roach and Robert Rich, sought to peel away the substratum layers of the inner consciousness, SOMA attempts to reconcile those emotions with the outer world through a wondrous, gripping corpus of sound. Utilizing a great assortment of synths, samplers, ...

First of all, that title: is it pronounced "doom" or "do me"? Either way of saying it applies to this six-song EP, which is Adult.'s first release on Thrill Jockey (fear not, Ersatz Audio fans, Adult. will continue to release music on their own imprint). Granted, Adult. has ...

After a year of touring and a fallen deal with Warner Bros. records he was swept into the world of commercial production and voice over work. In 1995 as he was about to embrace the music industry once again when his father, legendary Hall of Fame Radio host J.P McCarthy, passed away. Jamie then spiraled quietly into the depths of a Dewars bottle for 6 years. Appearing occasionally on the WJR radio show “Happy Hour” where he would perform experimental tracks that he had written under the influence, often quoting Charles Bukowski, and then leaving the show.In the fall of 2001, he sobered and returned from a 10 year hiatus from the music business. He began writing music again after a trip to Santa Monica, California where he'd seen a homeless person hang himself from a tree on Ocean Ave. Deeply moved by the tragedy, he wrote Strange Town and it was the beginning of a project that he swore he would see through to completion. It was then that he vowed never to take himself or life too seriously. His confessional storytelling lyrics are thought provoking, authentic and honest… and at times even comical. ...
