Personnel: Bill Douglas (bassoon, piano, synthesizer); Ars Nova (vocals); Stephanie Arado (violin); Brett Wallace (cello); Anne Stackpole-Cuellar (flute); Bill Jackson (clarinet); Peter Cooper (oboe). Unknown Contributor Role: Ars Nova. Arranger: Bill Douglas. Composer/bassoonist Bill Douglas has always had an affinity for the romance of Celtic music. On Deep Peace, Douglas has set to music poems by William Butler Yates, William Blake, Robert Burns, and Alfred Graves. Wonder of wonder, Douglas uses a real chorus -- the Ars Nova Singers -- and perfectly smooth they sing, like angels, silk, or fine scotch. The arrangements are delicately supportive; a soft piano joins near the end of the a cappella "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton" while "Piping Down the Valleys Wild" is set on its happy course by woodwinds and piano. Gradually, the oboe and piano take a more active role and are joined by strings. What brings Douglas' music above everyday church fare is his strong connection to the Celtic and the bittersweet nobility -- playful, yet sad -- of the oboe, bassoon, and clarinet. Instrumental interludes, such as "The Wandering Moon," freshen the ear to enjoy the chorus even more. Special acknowledgment must be given to the piano, a noble Bosendorfer Imperial Concert Grand, which is showcased on "The Secret Forest." This luxurious and unhurried album will take one's head and heart to heaven. ~ Carol Wright This important recording established a new creative mode for the multi-talented composer/instrumentalist Bill Douglas. With the help of the masterful Ars Nova Chorus, Douglas pairs a number of classic British poems with his own strong neo-classical compositions, creating powerful vocal songs in the tradition of other folk/classical fusionists like Ralph Vaughn Williams. The song "Deep Peace" first appeared on Bill Douglas's debut album JEWEL LAKE as a piece for piano and solo voice. Later, it garnered lots of airplay and sales on the popular CELTIC TWILIGHT compilation. The chorale version here has been covered by vocal groups all over the world, and was featured in the memorial service at Ground Zero on the one-year anniversary of 9/11. $37.45 HOWLS, RAPS & ROARS is a 4-CD box set compiled and annotated by Ann Charters containing Beat Generation's spoken word recordings made between 1958-69. In addition to masterworks like Ginsberg's "Howl" (heard in its entirety) and Kenneth Rexroth's "Thou Shalt Not Kill," this set presents previously unreleased recordings by Gregory Corso and Peter Orlovsky, as well as excerpts from the "Mad Mammoth Monster Poetry Readings" of 1959 and 1963. The subtitle -- "recordings from the San Francisco poetry renaissance" -- perfectly places in context the vitality of the contents of this multi-disc box set. While the Bay Area based Fantasy label is primarily known for its uncompromising and otherwise groundbreaking jazz releases, they were also home to some of the Beat Generations most prolific and genre defining figures. This collection gathers over four hours of recordings documented during the height of the Cold War in the late '50s and early '60s, historically reflecting the world as interpreted by such freewheelin' thinkers as Lew Welch, Michael McClure, David Meltzer, Kenneth Rexroth, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg. Under the influence and careful annotation of Ann Charters -- who is perhaps best known in the literary community for her valiant efforts as editor of the Portable Beat Reader -- Howls, Raps & Roars (1993) revisits some of America's most brilliant spoken-word recordings and aurally stimulating recitations borne of the tremendously prolific mid-century poetry scene. In addition to the definitively earnest efforts of the afore mentioned authors, also prominently featured on this collection is the work of comedian and social commentator Lenny Bruce -- who commences the set with over an hour's worth of his most profound recordings for Fantasy. His works -- most especially the irony-laden "Shorty Petterstein Interview" and equally strident "How To Relax Your Coloured Friends At Parties" are as over the top and deliciously ironic in the 21st century as they most ...
