BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH features nearly the same band heard on Art Farmer's SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR, his 1987 tribute to Billy Strayhorn. However, the flugelhorn player and his group perform quite differently on this album, which was recorded just one year later. Presumably, this is due, in large part, to the more contemporary repertoire chosen for this session. In fact, for the most part, Farmer's quintet focuses on little-known modern compositions, not standards.
The most experimental of the tracks is the sly "The Smile of the Snake," which purposely falls apart during pianist James Williams's solo. Just when the listener begins to wonder where the song is headed, Williams's cascading piano glissandos return to the main melody. "Progress Report," a Williams original, is another tune that sees the ensemble in roaring, adventurous form, and drummer Victor Lewis's fiery solo brings the song to delightful climax here. Dreamy ballads, including "Summer Serenade" and the title track, round out the otherwise exploratory set.

Coming of age at the dawn of the bebop era, Art Farmer rejected the mechanical playing much of bebop seemed to encourage. Instead, Farmer became known for his warm, fluid tone, and his ability to make the trumpet sing like a tender yet stately baritone voice.
On MODERN ART, Farmer emphasizes style over technique. His lush, lyrical tone is best demonstrated on the jazz classic, "Darn that Dream." On this ballad, Farmer employs a wistful, breathy sound, reflecting the song's doleful mood. Pianist Bill Evans accompanies Farmer using a soft yet nimble approach. In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute and tuba add to the sonic palette here, along with guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer and drummer Jack DeJohnette). Though a different version of this 1964 Paris concert was previously available on import, THE GREAT CONCERT OF CHARLES MINGUS restores the original song order and includes previously unreleased tracks. One of these is pianist Jaki Byard's solo opener, "A.T.F.W." (the initials of Art Tatum and Fats Waller), a ragged, beautiful collage of classical, bop, and ragtime themes.
