As seems to be the case with many of the Fantasy Records' CD reissues of the various Merl Saunders (keyboards/vocals) and Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) collaborations from the 1970s, FIRE UP + (1992) is a pastiche of several different long-players. Contained within the dozen tracks is the entirety of the HEAVY TURBULENCE (1972) project and another half-dozen selections from LIGHT UP (1973). Although both LPs were issued under Saunders' name, the featured musicians centered on significant contributions from Garcia, Tom Fogerty (guitar/vocals), and other friends, including John Kahn (bass) and Bill Vitt (drums). Saunders' arrangements--particularly with the Tower of Power brass on "Man Child" and "Soul Roach"--reveal a hidden talent for the keyboardist. Saunders alternates between the rubbery funk of "Expressway (To Your Heart)" and a comparably leaner sound on J.J. Cale's "After Midnight." Lead vocals are split between Saunders and Garcia, with the latter taking several of these songs with him into the Jerry Garcia Band. Most prominently, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "After Midnight," and the laid-back remake of the Doc Pomus R&B classic "Lonely Avenue."
Recorded between 1971 and 1973.

Fire Up + album
$13.45 TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF finds Robert Cray picking up the Memphis soul thread that infused so much of 1997's SWEET POTATO PIE. Joined by the always-reliable Memphis Horns, Cray delivers another masterful batch of tunes that are as much a tip of the hat to Stax as they are to Chess. The bluesman's creamy vocals fall somewhere between Sam Cooke and Otis Redding and are particularly effective on the brassy "24-7 Man" and the pleading "Let Me Know." The R&B map is well traversed with Jim Pugh's flickering organ licks and Steve Jordan's solid playing (turning "It's All Gone" into a lost Hi track), while the strolling tempo on "There's Nothing Wrong" brings to mind Motown's finer moments.
As always, the talented guitarist's choice of covers is an interesting mix. Willie Dixon's "Tollin' Bells" is presented with brushed drums and a reverberating ...

$10.15 This 1973 release features what is essentially a Bay Area bar band led by Merl Saunders (keyboards) and Jerry Garcia (guitar) during the latter musician's downtime from the Grateful Dead. | | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Fire Up + album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, ...
