Arriba! music CDs
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
The trumpeter and special guests performed 2 star-studded concerts at the historic Boston Symphony Hall with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops on September 18 & ...

| | Diecast Internal Revolution CD (2006)
Arriba! album
$10.95 Except for a temporary hiatus brought on by some major lineup changes, Diecast have been loyal, card-carrying, on time, dues-paying members of the "United New England Hardcore Metal Bands" union -- unlikely to be confused with the vast, recently franchised and still unproven masses crowding the factory floor, yet also still struggling to break out of the middle echelons to join union leaders like Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, and Shadows Fall. Which is a goofy way of saying that, for the most part, 2006's Internal Revolution is a two-sided affair. On the one hand, it offers the same, expertly performed but done-to-death genre trademarks heard on the previous year's Tearing Down Your Blue Skies, and about a thousand contemporary hardcore metal albums. Just listen to production line items like the title cut "Never Forget," "S.O.S.," or "Definition of a Hero," which essentially offer dull attempts to contrast dark and light: jagged-edged riffs versus sparkling six-string harmonies, acid-chortling croaked vocals versus soaring melodic choruses, furious bursts of thrashing intensity versus dead-stop-start bouts of silence, Godzilla versus Mothra -- you get the drift. On the other hand, there are promising signs of Diecast's concerted bid for uniqueness and (gulp!) maturity. Despite their unimaginative one-word titles (how grunge of them!), both "Fractured" and "Weakness" are the first to threaten that much hoped-for break ...
| | Chico Hamilton 6th Avenue Romp CD (2006)
Arriba! CD music
$14.49 The third of four releases in Chico Hamilton's astonishing burst of creativity in his 85th year is just about as fresh and open-minded as the previous two, while weighted more toward R&B territory. The concept is supposed to be a celebration of Los Angeles in the 1960s (and '70s), mostly of the soul scene, with some detours into the band books of Duke Ellington ("Take the 'A' Train," with trumpeter Jon Faddis on hand) and Count Basie ("Topsy"). Actually "Topsy" qualifies as an era-straddler, stamped equally by Basie's big band and Cozy Cole's rock & roll treatments -- and Hamilton's take is relatively straight-ahead, and mostly a showcase for guitarist Cary DeNigris. You cannot mistake the distinctive sound and feel of Hamilton's assortment of grooves as he kicks the fatback funk on "Chicken Pox" and "Cleo's Back," swings relentlessly on the "Route 66"-flavored "Thunderwalk," churns out a truckin' shuffle beat in the reprise of "Ain't No Sunshine," and eventually brings in the distinctive Hamilton bossa groove on Stevie Wonder's "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)." As in the previous two 2006 albums, Juniflip and Believe, Hamilton saves his most progressive thrust for last. With an accordion setting the riff, "I'm Still Thirsty" sounds like a propulsive marriage of electronica, zydeco and fast bossa nova. Yet the track bears his character; essentially, 6th Avenue Romp is an update and expansion of the kinds of grooves that he was knocking out in the '60s. Although sometimes the album tends to drift into loose, aimless jamming, the overall vitality of this CD, like that of its companions, is an inspiration to all of us -- including octogenarians. ~ Richard S. Ginell
Within the scope of an evening concert, Whiskey Chimp is bound to take its audience on a genre-bending roller coaster of musical emotions. Insurgent String Band Whiskey Chimp Releases 2nd Album Titled “Ventura”.Ventura, California, August, 18 2006 Insurgent: a rebel who revolts against civil authority or an established government. While making a clear nod to the bluegrass roots of their music, Whiskey Chimp is by no means letting it box them into a statically traditional and predictable format. They embrace string band music, yet treat it with a whimsical irreverence that could make the old guard shake their banjos in protest. Featuring ...
