| | Average White Band Soul Searching CD (1976)
Lone Ranger songs
$5.95 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Meters CD (1969)
Lone Ranger album
$11.59 Initially created to be the house band for Allen Toussaint and Marhsall Sehonr's Sansu Enterprises, the Meters started out backing such famous names as Lee Dorsey and Betty Harris. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Booker T. & The MGs may have been the most obvious influence, but the Meters differentiated themselves by injecting a healthy dose of New Orleans ...

| | Chris Barber Good Morning Blues: Blues Book Vol. 1 CD (1998) (Import) United Kingdom
Lone Ranger music CDs
$17.79 This two-fer of albums from the Chris Barber Band is from 1960 and 1964. The first features vocalist Ottilie Patterson, who joined the outfit in 1955 and was one of the finest blues singers ever to come out of Britain. Influenced by Bessie Smith, she holds her own throughout Barber's Blues Book, from her own "Bad Spell Blues" to Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues." The trad jazz backing never gets overpowering and offers some wonderful playing -- especially Monty Sunshine's clarinet work on "Four Point Blues." Good Morning Blues is more of a mixed bag, with Barber himself taking on a number of vocal chores (Patterson does appear on five cuts, including a wonderful "Frankie and Johnny"). The addition of electric guitar makes the sound a little more raucous, and the band has toned down the trad side of their jazz -- "Morning Train," for example, is very much an R&B instrumental, as is their take on Lionel Hampton's "Hamp's Blues." While their style might seem dated now, in their time they were a very influential outfit, one of the first to regularly include blues in their live sets as an important element of their sound. And they could swing their blues too -- a listen to the rhythm section on "Finishing Straight" readily confirms that. These records stand not only as some fine music, but also as insight into one segment ...
| | Julia Lee Kansas City Star CDs (1995) (Import) Import; Boxed Set; Germany
Lone Ranger songs
$128.15 Singer and pianist Julia Lee (1902-1958) is the heroine of Bear Family's five-CD set Kansas City Star, a 109-track anthology of classic jazz, small band swing, and jump blues recordings that map this woman's professional activities over a 25-year period with a thoroughness that is unparalleled anywhere else in her entire discography. Lee made her first records for the Merritt and Brunswick labels with her big brother George E. Lee & His Novelty Singing Orchestra in 1927 and 1929. Although consistently active as a performer in the famously wide-open Kansas City music scene, she did not record again until signing on with Capitol in 1944. By this time Lee was a seasoned performer who specialized in jump blues and swingy rhythm numbers, often cheerfully peppered with hedonistic lyrics. Winners in this category include "Snatch and Grab It," "I've Got a Crush on the Fuller Brush Man," "The Spinach Song (I Didn't Like It the First Time)," "Sit Down and Drink It Over," "All This Beef and Big Ripe Tomatoes," and the attractively titled "Oh Chuck ...
