Principally recorded in Europe in March, 1967 and The Whiskey A Go Go, Hollywood, California from April 8-10, 1966. Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals). A tremendously exciting--and at seven songs, way too short--live set from arguably, the greatest soul singer of the '60s. The first two tracks--"Respect" and "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa [Sad Song]"--derive from the Stax/Volt Revue's rapturously received European tour in early 1967; the rest (save for an alternate studio take of "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay") were taped during an L.A. club gig early the previous year. The performances are volcanic in both instances, but the sound quality on the European tracks is less than stellar--you don't get inside the music. The L.A. tracks, however, are fantastic in that regard--every detail, be it the way Redding bends pitch at strategic moments in "I've Been Loving You Too Long" or the way Duck Dunn bends a bass string to punctuate "Security," comes across in a way that almost seems cinematic. Otis Redding In Concert
$7.59 Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); James Young (guitar); Robert Holloway, Robert Pittman, Donald Henry, Albrisco Clark (tenor saxophone); Sammy Coleman, John Farris (trumpet); Clarence Johnson Jr. (trombone); Ralph Stewart (bass); Elbert Woodson (drums). Recorded live at the Whiskey A Go Go, Los Angeles, California on March 31, 1966. Originally released on Atco (33-265). Includes original release liner notes by Pete Johnson. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch. This album, released posthumously, captured Otis Redding's show at the Whisky A Go Go from April of 1966 in Los Angeles. What is essential here was that it captured Otis Redding's sound in a small club with his own touring band, as opposed to his work on stage with Booker T. & the MG's -- an ideal band, to be sure, which is why they were sent over to Europe with him and why they were at Monterey with him a year later, ...
