In the 1960s, Stax Records was best known for raw southern soul that rejected the type of sleekness and pop sensibilities favored by the northern soulsters at Motown. But by the early '70s, Memphis soul was losing its popularity, and Stax's A&R department started to emphasize northern and so-called "uptown" soul in order to stay competitive. One of Stax/Volt's biggest sellers was the Dramatics, a Detroit group that, like the Temptations at Motown and the O'Jays in the Gamble & Huff camp, effectively combined gritty soul belting with a sleek production style. Thanks to major hits ranging from the delightfully funky "Whacha See Is Whacha Get" to slow jams and ballads like "Hey You! Get Off My Mountain," "Toast to the Fool" and the melancholy "In the Rain," the Dramatics were on quite a roll in the early-to-mid-'70s. All of those gems are included on the hour-long CD, The Best of the Dramatics, which offers a fine overview of the quintet's Stax/Volt years. Many Dramatics albums are worth owning, but if a listener were allowed to own only one Dramatics CD, this would be it. ~ Alex Henderson
A nice collection of this Detroit-based group's best records for the Cadet and ABC-MCA labels between 1974-1980. Besides the title track (a #5 R&B hit that crossed over to the pop charts), highlights include "I Can't Get Over You," "Be My Girl," "You're Foolin' You," "Love Is Missing From Our Lives," "Don't Make Me No Promises" and the pop crossover smash "Do What You Want, Be What You Are." Although their earlier sides for Wingate, Sport and Volt aren't on here (thus leaving off their biggest hit, "Whatcha See Is What You Get"), this is still a nice collection of tunes by one of the '70s' most prolific and dependable R&B acts. ~ Cub Koda

Q (10/94, p.130) - 3 Stars - Good - "...building through the usual raindrops-are-really-tears-actually malarkey to a near-hysterical climax. Worth the price of admission here alone..." Rap Pages (3/99, p.144) - 4 (out of 5) - "...THE BEST OF THE DRAMATICS gathers hits from the latter part of the group's career....The ballads, however, set the group apart from the soul-turned-quasidisco pack..." One of the Best R&B/ Soul groups of All time!!! Talk about a dynamic vocal group where REAL singing is performed, L.J. Reynolds and company leads you down memory lane with a string of CLASSIC hits. Ron Banks' smooth falsetto is also featured in many of my favorite songs listed below:
Fall In Love, Lady Love, Hey You! Get Off My Mountain, ***And I Panicked, I Dedicate My Life To You, ***I Made Myself Lonely, ***Toast To The Fool
This CD also contain their memorable classic "In The Rain." Submitted by kblake4866 (Harlem, New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Of The Dramatics A++++! I highly recommend this album to newer fans of the Dramatics. The funkier, looser side of the Dramatics is demonstrated in songs like "The Devil Is Dope", "Get Up and Get Down", "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", and "Beware Of the Man With The Candy In His Hand". The Dramatics show us that they can sing ballads astoundingly well, in songs such as "In the Rain", "And I Panicked", "Fell For You", and "I Dedicate My Life To You". The Dramatics are one of the finest soul groups, who can sing anything from uptempos to ballads, to midtempos like "Gimme Some Good Soul Music" and "You Could Become The Very Heart Of Me", slow jams, and anything in between. If you don't have this album, I suggest you look for it. It will give you some good soul music. Submitted by dramaticfever (Georgia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
