The Staple Singers include: Roebuck "Pops" Staples (vocals, guitar); Mavis Staples (vocals); Yvonne Staples, Cleotha Staples (vocals). Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1986, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino. Liner Note Author: Lee Hildebrand. Unknown Contributor Roles: Cleotha Staples; Mavis Staples; Pervis Staples; Roebuck "Pops" Staples. The best and most famous cuts from their glory years at Stax. Includes their massive hits "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There"; less famous but similar gospel-funk fusions like "Touch a Hand (Make a Friend)" and "Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom Boom)"; and less expected items like a cover of "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." It does not, however, have their 1975 number one single "Let's Do It Again," which they recorded just after cutting their ties to Stax. ~ Richie Unterberger Of the many Staple Singers compilations, the 1986 set on the Stax label is the most concise overview of the brief period where the family group weren't just gospel superstars, but a regular presence on the pop and R&B charts. BEST OF THE STAPLE SINGERS includes all seven of the group's Top 40 hits between 1971 and 1974, including the Number One smash "I'll Take You There." (The group's second and final Number One single, the 1975 movie theme "Let's Do It Again," is not included, since it was recorded for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label after Stax's dissolution.) Also included are a handful of the gospel showcases for lead singer Mavis Staples that first made the group's name, along with sanctified covers of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' on the) Dock of the Bay" and the Band's "The Weight." BEST OF THE STAPLE SINGERS is a basic, no-nonsense, 16-track overview that does the job for casual fans, but it will also serve as a springboard for those who wish to explore further into the group's enormous catalogue.Recommended Best Of The Staple Singers Music Best Of The Staple Singers Songs Best Of The Staple Singers Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Funk, Reggae & Gospel The sound is sweet and I had forgotten how many hits the family group put up. Roebuck "Pops" Staples is at his best. Don't miss "My Main Man." Submitted by bleonard (Fort Worth, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Great collection, but audio quality slightly reduced... I remember giving a review about this collection a while back. I had said that the collection of songs is wonderful, but the audio quality is not quite clear and sharp like it should. The sound seems to be slightly muffled. I think this needs to be put through the remaster process sometime so that the sound is as sharp and clear as it should be. Submitted by Matt (Macomb, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Great Collection of their best Stax recordings! This is a wonderful album of The Staple Singers. It contains a load of their great sounding songs that they recorded and released on the timeless and forever famous Stax label. The album is so complete; every one of their great songs are together on one disc. That means, forget about trying to buy all the other individual albums of theirs that these tracks were originally released on. For those of you that want a great collection of the Staple Singers' songs, get this set; it will save you time and money. Submitted by Matt (Macomb, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

It’s destined for the chosen few. They all possess a certain swagger, a certain charm, a special energy, and are definitely a magnetic force to those individuals around them. Just like a star in the sky, a true Star will continue to shine whether you notice it or not. Meet Chris Shields, born and raised in Maywood, IL. Product of a single parent home, but thanks to a strong woman Chris is here today. He started off as young charismatic prep basketball player and found himself in a place some might call the “Trap” as a small time hustler. Through out life Chris was always passionate about music and the release of the Blueprint by Jay-Z in 2001 brought out a hunger to rhyme. So young Chris would construct a flow he could call his own from sun up to down on the corner of 6th and Walnut while making a few dollars. As Chris continued to hustle and found himself falling deeper into the “Trap”, he smartened up and used his basketball skills to put himself through school. A basketball scholarship and education from one of the best Private institutions in the nation, Mckendree University, gave Chris time to reflect. Also gave him time to polish his flow. ...
