Originally released as THE MONTREUX COLLECTION, this 1998 reissue contains one bonus track taken from THE DIZZY GILLESPIE BIG 7.
Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland on July 16, 17 & 19, 1975.
For three days in 1975 producer Norman Granz largely took over the Montreux Jazz Festival and recorded nearly everything; he had a similar arrangement with the 1977 edition. This double-LP (whose contents have mostly not been reissued yet on CD) has music from nine different groups ranging from unaccompanied solos by guitarist Joe Pass and pianist Oscar Peterson to an octet. Just listing the all-star performers should be enough to water the mouths of most straightahead jazz fans. In addition to Pass and Peterson there are trumpeters Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie, tenors Johnny Griffin, Zoot Sims and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, altoist Benny Carter, Toots Thielemans on harmonica, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianists Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and Tommy Flanagan, bassists Niels Pedersen and Keter Betts and drummers Louie Bellson, Mickey Roker and Bobby Durham plus Ella Fitzgerald sings "The Man I Love." The music is essentially standards and blues but the classic musicians come up with enough surprises in their solos to hold one's interest throughout. ~ Scott Yanow

Montreux Collection album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First ...

Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed by original engineer Bruce Botnick and the surviving members of the Doors, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS is a solid tribute to the band.
The first Doors album was an important development in the evolution ...

| | Sergio Mendes/Magic Lady CD (2005)
Montreux Collection songs
$10.65 Sergio Mendes spent the '70s straying very far from his Brazilian roots. The Sergio Mendes album from 1975 is very much in the smooth soul/quiet storm bag and Magic Lady from 1978 is a straight disco record. Neither of the records are the disasters you might have already pegged them as. Sergio Mendes is actually a small pleasure and Magic Lady, while overly smooth, isn't an embarrassment. The best part about Sergio Mendes is the sweetly harmonizing vocals of Bonnie Bowden and Sondra Catton and the laid-back groove that percolates throughout the album. The songs are all covers. Some like the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" or Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free" have interesting arrangements, while some like Stevie Wonder's "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)" have hackneyed or meandering arrangements. Best to call it a mixed bag and cherry-pick the three or four good songs. Unlike Sergio Mendes, which actually has some emotional weight, Magic Lady is total disco fluff that sounds like it was made by the house ...
