Sarah Vaughan's debut for the Pablo label is a bit of an acquired taste for the jazz fan. She is accompanied by a variety of Brazilian all-stars (including Milton Nascimento, Dori Caymmi and on two numbers Antonio Carlos Jobim himself) and Sassy (whose voice was still in tremendous form) fares quite well, but few of the performances are all that memorable and none of the dozen songs entered her permanent repertoire. This set is really more for fans of contemporary Brazilian music than for jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
Sarah Vaughan's recordings during the last phase of her magnificent career weren't always up to her usual standards, but this late-'70s set focusing on Brazilian music was a superb exception. Vaughan sounded as delightful and glorious as ever doing songs by legendary composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Milton Nascimento and newer voices like Dorival Caymmi, Oscar Castro Neves and Eumir Deodato, among many others. The backing and rhythms weren't Americanized pap, but an accurate reflection of contemporary Brazil's sounds at the time. The CD adds two bonus tracks that weren't on the original, giving listeners the full results of what proved to be one of the great Sarah Vaughan's final studio triumphs. ~ Ron Wynn

Here is Sarah, in total control of that magnificent instrument and the music. The voice has deepened, the range has not. It's good to see the repertoire includes a number of composers. And what is it about these Brazilian composers? Consistently, they pen beautiful melodies with lyrics that cut straight to the heart of your emotions.

Anyone who loves Sara's saxaphone voice and Bossa Nova will be stunned by this masterpiece.
Just look at the people with her! What can you say.
Stan Getz, Charlie Bird brought Bossa to a wide US audience. Then everyone from Zoot, Toots, Mulligan etc took their turn at the Brazilian album. Sara's is one of the best.

I first heard this CD several years ago while visiting a friend in Washington DC. Most of the men at the event were involved in watching the the Super Bowl, however when the hostess put this CD on for guest that were not overly involved in the game, it really set the mood for the rest of the evening for me my date and many of the other guest. It was truly wonderful to hear If You Went Away. It was beautifully sung yet somewhat sad and haunting memorable.Also, The Face I Love. Ilove the entire CD and have since purchased copies of it for friends, as well as purchased Brizilian Romance by Ms. Vaughan. I simply love Ms.Sarah Vaughan and whatever she sings.
