The full range of Ellington's genius is presented here: from the rhythmic exoticism of "Bula," "Guitar Amor" and "Silk Lace" (with a great passage by clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton) to the lilting "In A Sentimental Mood" (with exquisite playing by Paul Gonsalves) and the uptempo big band jam of "E.S. P." For variety, Grantz included three tracks of Duke playing with only a rhythm section, including two versions of a number called "The Shepherd," and "Kinda Dukish."
