This is the album that made Joe Pass famous. On what was actually his second set of unaccompanied guitar solos (Virtuoso No. 4 from a month earlier was released years later), Pass shows that it is possible to play unaccompanied versions of such up-tempo tunes as "How High the Moon," "Cherokee," and "The Song Is You" on guitar. Pass not only performs the melodies and heated solos, but provides basslines and harmonies while using a conventional technique (unlike Stanley Jordan's later tapping). Pass would record many unaccompanied recordings and perform at numerous solo concerts during the next 20 years; this is the set that started it all, and it is a certified classic. When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became the talk of the town; within days, his recording career had begun; and within a year he was able to give up his teaching job to front a full-time band.
Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles Davis' epic ensemble with John Coltrane, resulting in some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time (including MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE). Davis returned the favor in March of 1958, appearing as a sideman on Adderley's all-star quintet date for Blue Note, and the resulting session is indeed SOMETHIN' ELSE.

On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.

Nick Cave has gone through many changes in his career: from his bellowing mad-singer days in the Birthday Party to blues-inspired-lounge-singer-in-Eternity's-waiting-room. In between, he recorded live shows in 1992 and 1993 for LIVE SEEDS, and it ably sums up the power of Cave's music up to that time. In his solo career, Cave has fallen under the spell of American blues and gospel and Anglo-American mythology, and his interest/obsession shines throughout these inspired performances. "Papa Won't Leave You Henry" is structured like a sea shanty, but the lyrics are about a dark journey of brothels and murder. "Brother My Cup Is Empty" is almost a creepy, bluesy country song (written by Kurt Weil and Bertold Brecht, if you can imagine that). "Tupelo" is another dark blues-drenched tale, and the gospel-inspired closer, "New Morning" finishes on a hopeful note. The Bad Seeds' playing is punchy and driven, with individual players punctuating the singer's tales appropriately. I was born May 28th, 1979 in Denver Colorado. At age 3, I was removed from my home due to physical and sexual abuse from my father. The Department of Social Services placed 2 of my siblings as well as myself into foster care. At tha age of 7, I was adopted (along with my brother and sister) into a family of 9. From tha start I was labeled as anti-social, uncontrollable, and unpredictable. A child that could go from lovable to pit-bull in a matter of moments. One thing I had to my advantage was my undying willpower to accomplish anything I put my mind to. By the age of ten I was waist deep in crimes that ranged from schoolyard fistfights to burglary. From smoking pot ta burning bullets in bondfires. At age 12, I was arrested for breaking and entering into the elementary school. During the break in my wrist was cut on the window and blood gushed everywhere. After a trip to the emergency room and a visit from the police, I pled guilty in court. From then on my criminal activity and conflicts in the community escalated. Charges of felony menacing, criminal mischeif, criminal trespass, possession of deadly weapons, and theft were cause for out of home placement. I was hospitalized at Bethesda Mental Health and Cleo Wallace, placed in Denver Childrens Home, did time in El Pueblo Boys Ranch, Work Camp, Boot Camp, the Jacob Center in Lake County and Summit County, Summit County Jail, Dade County Jail, Mount View Detention Center, and the Community Responsibility Center. Rage therapy was a major reason for my criminal activity. Rage therapy is basicly legal abuse that resulted in the death of a young girl in Evergreen Colorado. I was forced ta participate in this "therapy" while I resided in the house of my adoptive parents. I knew if I continued to commit crimes, I would eventually be removed from the home and the so-called "therapy". And I'll be honest, I had a gang of fun being a menace to a society that never gave me a chance! Being a ward of the state promised me a college tuition of which I never saw a dime. Even after the thousands of hours I put into school which resulted in scores of up to a 4.0 G.P.A I was denied a chance to recieve a high school diploma. Then to top things off I was placed in an adult facility as an experiment, the youngest person to be in the program in 25 years. ...
