The seventh of eight CDs in this valuable series matches the remarkable pianist in a quartet with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco. DeFranco, no slouch himself, directly challenges Tatum and their uptempo romps are often quite wondrous. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in Los Angeles, California on February 6, 1956. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green.
Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Buddy DeFranco (clarinet); Red Callender (bass); Bill Douglass (drums).
Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7 Music Art Tatum Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7 Songs Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7 Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Fine virtuoso music When this session came out on Lp it was very, very well reviewed. In spite of that I never bought the Lp. I had heard Buddy De Franco's clarinet and, like most others, found it "cold". I could not imagine how De Franco and Tatum could be as good together as the reviewers said. Well, I was really stupid. Both De Franco and Tatum are masters of their instruments, and De Franco is probably more harmonically hip to Tatum than any of the other instrumentalists on the Clef sessions. The music on this album is intricate, conversational and exhilirating. This album really is better than the Ben Webster-Art Tatum album (or any of the others). If you like good jazz, you really have to get this album. Submitted by bill (Melbourne, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fantastic Well, I am a huge jazz-fan but strangely enough I have never liked the sound of a clarinet. Until I heard this album. Tatum is one of the big giants and pioneers of jazz for me, so I collected all the Group Masterpieces including this one. I just fell in love with DeFranco's sound. Amazing! Tatum is just the best jazz-pianist and maybe even the best pianist the world has ever known. Classic pianists like Rachmaninoff and Horowitz came to Tatums concerts to hear his style and technique. Just a brilliant album. Submitted by Pim van Tol, pgtvantol (Heemskerk, Netherlands) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Natalie Cole Unforgettable, With Love CD (1991)
Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7 music CDs
$13.79 This special edition package contains UNFORGETTABLE, WITH LOVE, a bonus single featuring Natalie Cole's version of "The Christmas Song" and a video featuring both "Unforgettable" and "The Christmas Song."
UNFORGETTABLE in many ways, this album was a musical breakthrough, garnering countless awards and re-establishing Natalie Cole's reputation as a broad talent with eclectic aspirations. She is an accomplished singer/songwriter and pianist, and on this interpretive collection of her father's (the legendary Nat King Cole's) standards she raised the stakes and entered the world of superstar divas like Barbara Streisand.
UNFORGETTABLE employs an impressive collection of musicians and arrangers, and through the power of songwriting perfection it effectively joins two generations, creating a moving and important musical document. From the opening "The Very Thought Of You," the listener is transported to another era, where lyrics were meaningful and melodies were held in high regard. And throughout the album, Cole pays respect to this craft of "romantic" songwriting. Among the twenty-two tracks, there's a swinging, scatting big-band version of "Paper Moon"; a hip, trio-styled ...

| | Bill Wyman Anyway The Wind Blows CD (1999) (Import) Hong Kong
Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7 album
$11.85 While his old bandmates rock on, this Stone is definitely not alone on his second go-around with an all-star combo. Georgie Fame and Paul Carrack vocalize alongside Gary Brooker on keyboards, Albert Lee and Andy Fairweather-Low on guitar, Chris Rea and Mick Taylor on slide, and Nicky Hopkins on keyboards -- well, not all on the same track. Nonetheless, the Classics IV song "Spooky" sounds lifeless. Performing favorites by J.J. Cale, Dan Hicks, Mose Allison, Willie Dixon and a handful of Wyman originals in the jazz and R&B traditions, only Fame turns in a fancy, characteristic performance on the Hicks song "Walking One and Only"; his voice throughout is the project's super-high spot. Wyman sounds perfectly happy plunking away throughout, though ...

| | Ernest Dawkins Messenger: Live At The Original Velvet Lounge CD (2006)
Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7 songs
$13.39 Ernest Dawkins is in his element during concert or club performances, and has a stance within the post-bop and free bop continuum that speaks of his heritage coming through the ranks in Chicago. Blues, hard swing, and sounds from the black church and Africa all merge into a unified whole that is infectious, head-nodding, and smile-inducing. Leading his New Horizons quintet, Dawkins (alternately on alto and tenor saxophone) has the roaring heart of a lion and storytelling soul of a griot in this instrumental context. Trumpeter Maurice Brown and trombonist Steve Berry are young enough to be fearless and talented enough to provide perfect front-line foils for Dawkins, ...
