One of the rare jazz two-record sets that's actually a worthwhile expenditure of vinyl and time, 1975's Bahiana is one of Dizzy Gillespie's finest albums of the decade. In the '40s, Gillespie had been one of the first U.S. bandleaders to take an active interest in Latin jazz, but his interest in the music had been intermittent in the intervening decades; Bahiana (named for the Brazilian state of Bahia) was his first all-Brazilian album in over a decade. It's a goodie, though. By the mid-'70s, interest in the original wave of bossa nova had largely died out, replaced on the one side by the tropicalia movement and on the other by the fusiony disco-pop of Airto Moreira and Deodato. Bahiana's richly expansive tunes -- not one under seven and a half minutes, and even the three ten-plus minute entries deserving every second -- are built on pure carnival rhythms, like the percolating, self-explanatory "Samba." Guitarist Alexander Gafa contributes half of the eight tunes, but the highlights are Gillespie's own festive "Carnival" and the hypnotic "Olinga," which sounds like Antonio Carlos Jobim sitting in on rehearsals for Kind of Blue. Glaxo Babies were born out of the thriving Bristol punk scene in 1977. They enjoyed Indie chart success with the 12" EP 'This Is Your Life' in 1979 and notoriety when its follow up 'Christine Keeler' was banned by Radio One. John Peel, who offered them sessions and gigs with his legendary road show, championed the Glaxo Babies. Sadly though, the band was always too recalcitrant, headstrong and idealistic for their own good and imploded acrimoniously after barely 18 months together. With a sense of unfinished business, the nucleus of the original band (Rob Chapman - vocals, Dan Catsis - guitar, Charlie Llewellin - drums) reformed in 1985. Here are the results, inventive and melodic psychedelic pop and warped funk that somehow sounds fresher now than it did in the 1980's. Cherry Red. 2007.

The Glaxo Babies had a strange two-stage career: first as punk rock originals (and John Peel staples) in 1977, and then in the mid-'80s as harbingers of the explosive union of dance music and neo-psych. This fine collection focuses on the latter stage when the band re-formed as a trio--vocalist Rob Chapman, guitarist Dan Catsis, and drummer Charlie Llewellin--and recorded a series of sides that melded off-kilter funk, British indie rock, and psychedelia. They were a commercial blip in their day, but the second half of Glaxo Babies' lifespan has aged well, and presaged the Madchester marriages of guitar weirdness and danceability that followed.
The first incarnation of the Glaxo Babies was a rather noisy, doomy post-punk outfit connected to the Y Records axis of the Slits and the Pop Group that broke up after a spate of releases in the early '80s. Three-fifths of the original lineup (singer Rob Chapman, guitarist and keyboardist Dan Catsis, and drummer Charles Llewelyn ditched the saxophonist and the bassist) re-formed in 1985 to begin recording new material, but it wasn't until this 18-track compilation of studio recordings and home demos recorded in the latter half of the '80s and released in 2007 that their work reached an audience.
