The Firehouse Five Plus Two, a spirited Dixieland group that often used humor in a good-natured way (such as having a siren go off during their hotter final choruses), recorded a few "concept" albums where a group of titles had a theme of sorts. For this CD reissue of a former LP, the band mostly plays songs having to do with the sea, such as "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," "A Sailboat in the Moonlight," "She Was Just a Sailor's Sweetheart," and "Asleep in the Deep"; however, "Peoria" is a bit of a stretch. The group at the time consisted of trombonist Ward Kimball, trumpeter Danny Alguire, George Probert on soprano sax, pianist Frank Thomas, banjoist Dick Roberts, Ralph Ball or George Bruns on tuba, and drummer Eddie Forrest. Fun music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Ray Drummond Camera In A Bag CD (1989)
Goes To Sea music CDs
$16.55 One of bassist Ray Drummond's earliest dates as a leader was this delightful quintet session, with David "Fathead" Newman, Kenny Barron, Steve Nelson, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Drummond's perfect intonation and matchless time is present in any session in which he takes part, but it is the bassist's strong original compositions and swinging arrangements that particularly catch the listener's ear. The title track was co-composed with pianist Niels Lan Doky (who is not present on this date), it is an up-tempo blues line that has some choice flute by Newman. It's followed by the unusual "Relentless Pursuit," which finds the leader vamping on just one note as the rest of the group develops this intense modal work. "Thinking of E.H." is a initially a waltzing blues with superb polyrhythms by ...
| | Gary Smulyan Saxophone Mosaic CD (1993)
Goes To Sea songs
$15.05 Gary Smulyan has gradually emerged as one of the top successors to the deep-toned baritonist Pepper Adams. For this Cross Cross CD Smulyan uses a saxophone section partly drawn from the Mel Lewis Orchestra (Dick Oatts on alto and soprano, altoist Billy Drewed, tenors Ralph Lalama and Richie Perry and baritonist Scott Robinson) and a fine rhythm section. The arrangements of Bob Belden are a major factor in the date's success as he successfully revives a variety of obscurities from the 1950s including Quincy Jones's "Stockholm Sweetnin'," Johnny Carisi's "Springsville" and Horace Silver's "Speculation" in ...
| | Batman Returns CD (1992) Original Soundtrack
Goes To Sea album
$7.59 Considering that Batman Returns is an expensive sequel to a blockbuster hit, you might be forgiven for expecting the music (and this album) to completely echo the first movie. Not so -- but then, the sequel hares off in quite a few new directions compared to the first movie. Some credit has been given Tim Burton's complete control over this movie.
Rather than leaning on rescored and rehashed cues from the first movie, Elfman has instead fashioned a score that consists mainly of new themes and material. The Batman theme is there, of course, larger than life and twice as heroic, but there are additional themes to help define the Penguin, Catwoman and Max Shreck.
Both the Penguin and Catwoman themes are of note -- the Penguin, abandoned as a child, is graced with a musical theme that reflects childhood. However, this is childhood seen in a broken mirror. While the use of choral material reflects childhood (much as the choral material did in Edward Scissorhands) it's a dark, warped childhood that's ...
