Along with Louis Armstrong and King Oliver, trombonist and bandleader Kid Ory was one of the founding fathers of jazz. Ironically, Ory made some of his best--and certainly best recorded--music in the 1950s, after a hiatus from the business in the '30s and a forceful comeback in the '40s. The band heard on these '54 sessions is especially excellent, and features clarinetist George Probert, trumpeter Alvin Alcorn, and a dynamic rhythm section in guitarist Bill Newman, pianist Don Ewell, bassist Ed Garland, and drummer Minor Hall.
The musicians distinguish themselves as ensemble players and as soloists, with Ory's famous tailgate trombone front and center throughout. There are versions of traditional tunes ("When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Maple Leaf Rag") alongside W.C. Handy's "Yellow Dog Blues" and "Muskrat Ramble," Ory's own contribution to the canon of all-time jazz classics. Though recorded in an era when traditional jazz was almost totally eclipsed by more modern styles, Ory and company let the old-school banner fly, and the result is vigorous, fun-loving, and timeless music.

Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band (1954) music CDs
$13.39 Pilgrim's Descent: A review of Solace's “Nagari” by Maduro First impressions are paramount. I received my copy of the long awaited Solace album today in the mail and once I had some free time in a dark room replaying the release for the third time in a row I had to capture this. Nagari is the most dark, complex, and complete album that Solace has released to date. It is personal and perhaps introspective through its cryptic allusions - it is a journey and it seems to capture one’s purgatory through diverse soundscapes. This may very well be the soundtrack of one’s personal descent and struggle with personal conceptions of that which is beyond us all, one’s personal struggle with religion. This is a serious album, and wonderfully beautiful. Some Solace fans may be taken back by the dark nature of this release - but this is the sound of Solace - the sum of who he is and where he has come from. Make no mistake, this release ...
