LEGENDARY KID was recorded in 1955, and though the jazz world had been revolutionized by the advent of bebop, Ory was nowhere near his expiration date and could still swing with the best of them, as he proves on this set. In a small-group setting, the Kid runs through such classics as "Mahogany Hall Stomp" and "At the Jazz Band Ball," and ends up with one of the finest albums in his discography.
Kid Ory was one of the pivotal figures of early jazz, and his approach to the trombone influenced virtually everyone that followed him. That he was mentor to the likes of King Oliver and Louis Armstrong is no small credit to his name either. Though Ory's glory days were in the 1920s and '30s, he continued playing and recording all through the '40s, '50s, and '60s.
Personnel: Kid Ory, Alvin Alcorn, Phil Gomez, Lionel Reason, Julian Davidson, Wellman Braud, Minor Hall.

Legendary Kid
$9.45 This is the companion CD to the William Claxton book of the same title.
This 1995 release brings some Chet Baker rarities to CD for the first time while commemorating photographer William Claxton's eponymous book. Representing the jazz legend in his early years, the selections heard on YOUNG CHET are taken from two recording dates, the first in 1954, and the second two years later. Baker was 25 and 27 years old respectively.
This reissue is testament to Chet Baker's innate talent for music, including his ability to play trumpet with great lyrical insight and conceptual maturity. Always dedicated to reviving obscure tunes, he breathes new life into Kai Winding's 1949 composition, "A Night on Bop Mountain," employing the talents of Bill Loughborough on a percussion instrument known alternatively as the chromatic tympani or boobams. Baker also performs a light and airy version of Miles Davis' 1951 blues, "Down." An especially lively piano solo from Bobby Timmons marks the latter, while the trumpeter himself plays with an unerring melodic shrewdness.

| | Mano Negra King Of Bongo CDs (1992)
Legendary Kid
$8.19 King of Bongo showcases Mano Negra as a straightforward rock band, downplaying its trademark eclecticism and turning up the guitars. The manic rhythmic drive is throttled back, and the broad range of styles the group explored on Puta's Fever only pop up sporadically to spice the rock context. The almost all-English lyrics embrace the outlaw rocker stance, and the material is largely geared toward emphasizing Mano Negra's connection with the punk side of the rock spectrum. The ranting rave-up "Letter to the Censors" isn't that far from Motörhead, and the acoustic guitar and organ on "Out of Time Man" has a feel close to Iggy Pop's "The Passenger." "Don't Want You No More" even lopes along at a country & western-flavored clip. Mano Negra can rock hard and convincingly -- notably on the steady, rolling ...

| | Bobby Hutcherson Wise One CD (2009)
Legendary Kid
$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrčre of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar as anyone with this music, being a survivor of the turbulent '60s jazz scene, where he was in the midst of helping change the music. Here he adds extraordinary taste and ...

PIG hit the Jackson Hole music scene hard last summer leaving a trail of drunken revelers locked up in the local jail each Tuesday night.
