Firehouse Five Plus Two: Danny Alguire (trumpet); Ward Kimball (trombone, vocals, sound effects); Ed Penner (tuba, bass saxophone); John Lucas, Clarke Mallery, Tom Sharpsteen, George Probert (clarinet); Frank Thomas (piano, celeste); Harper Goff, Dick Roberts (banjo); Jim MacDonald, Monte Mountjoy, Jerry Hamm (drums). Producers: Lester Koenig, Robert D. Kirstein and Neshuhi Ertegun. Engineers: Lowell Frank, Val Valentin, Roy DuNann, Seth Perkins, John Palladino. Recorded between 1949 and 1954. Originally released on Good Time Jazz as 3 titles "The Firehouse Five Plus Two Story" Vol. 1 (12010), Vol. 2 (12011), and Vol. 3 (12012). Includes original release liner notes by Lester Koenig. Digitally remastered by Gary Hobish (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This double CD reissues the first three LPs by the Firehouse Five Plus Two, a very popular Dixieland group in the 1950s. In addition to trombonist Ward Kimball (who occasionally lets loose on a siren), the main soloists are generally trumpeter Danny Alguire and either Clarke Mallery, Tom Sharpsteen, or George Probert on clarinet. The spirited jamming mixes together standards, a few obscurities, and an occasional original (including "Firehouse Stomp," "Fireman's Lament," and "Firechief Rag"). Although not exactly innovative, the music is quite fun and easily recommended to Dixieland fans. ~ Scott Yanow Firehouse Five Plus Two Story Music | List Price | $24.98 (You save $6.73) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Jazz CDs, Jazz Instrument, Dance, Jazz Traditional, Dixieland | | Label | Good Time Jazz | | Orig Year | 1991 | | All Time Sales Rank | 28232 | | CD Universe Part number | 1035260 | | Catalog number | 22055 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | Feb 03, 1994 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Mono | | Personnel | Dick Roberts - banjo Danny Alguire - trumpet Monte Mountjoy Frank Thomas - piano, celeste George Probert - clarinet Ward Kimball - trombone, vocals, sound effects John Lucas Clarke Mallery Ed Penner - tuba, bass saxophone Harper Goff Jerry Hamm - drums Jim MacDonald Tom Sharpsteen

Liner Note Author: Michael Cuscuna. Recording information: 10/08/1963-11/18/1963. Arguably John Coltrane's finest all-around album, this recording has brilliant versions of "Afro Blue" and "I Want to Talk About You"; the second half of the latter features Coltrane on unaccompanied tenor tearing into the piece but never losing sight of the fact that it is a beautiful ballad. The remainder of this album ("Alabama," "The Promise," and "Your Lady") is almost at the same high level. ~ Scott Yanow By 1963, when LIVE AT BIRDLAND was recorded, the John Coltrane Quartet had evolved into the finest working band in all of jazz, achieving an extraordinary balance of freedom and form, visceral intensity and romantic sensitivity. Each member was an innovator in his own right. From McCoy Tyner's powerful orchestrations, to bassist Jimmy Garrison's indomitable pulse and Elvin Jones' telepathic polyrhythms, this was a thrilling group at a peak of wonder and discovery. Jones' dancing 6/8 pulse and elemental barrage of tom and cymbal colors make the quartet sound like a big band ...
