| | Sonny Rollins Sunny Days, Starry Nights CD Sonny Rollins Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Recorded in 1984, SUNNY DAYS AND STARRY NIGHTS crackles with energy from the get-go, kicking off with the calypso-flavored Rollins original "Mava Mava." Rollins gives the band room to roam, but it's clearly his show, and he solos with ferocity throughout. "Tell Me You Love Me" reprises the island vibe, with tenor and trombone laying down a tight front line before bursting out with solos.
The Noel Coward tune "I'll See You Again" has Rollins overdubbing a second tenor part throughout, playing a two-horn arrangement on the head and taking the first solo as a contrapuntal duet with himself before giving way to a piano solo and some fours with the drums. The set also includes the Kern-Mercer ballad "I'm Old Fashioned," and closes with the hypnotic, circular "Kilauea." Note to purists: the celeste on "Wynton" merely provides some color on the head, and the DX7 synthesizers indicated on "Tell Me You Love Me" are almost unnoticeable.
