Recorded in the twilight of his career, this turned out to be the 63-year-old Arthur Prysock's last album; he retired due to illness a few years later, moved to Bermuda and passed away there in 1997. It was the last gasp of a mini-Renaissance for the veteran chitlin' circuit balladeer, the third album on a Milestone contract that had, at long last, resulted in some recognition by the Grammy voters, if not the music press. Unfortunately, it is the least of the Milestones, for Prysock's deep-pile-carpet bass-baritone was suddenly developing a gravelly frayed edge and problems up high. A member in good standing of those deep-throated baritones who plied their trade in the 1950s and beyond, this album compiles work that Arthur Prysock did for the Old Town, Verve, and Mercury labels. Along with Johnny Hartman, Al Hibbler, and Billy Eckstine to whom's voice Prysock's bears a striking resemblance, Prysock was one of those black crooners who reached a level of popularity among the lovers of traditional pop and standard material. Prysock also had some success with rhythm & blues, especially with "I Didn't Sleep a Wink Last Night." Morning, Noon, and Night compiles more traditional material recorded by the South Carolina native. The one R&B number is a funky B.B. King- penned "Woke up This Morning" featuring the tenor sax of Prysock's brother Wilbert "Red" Prysock. This cut is one of the highlights of the album.

One thing about the Klezmatics, they're not afraid of a little controversy with their klezmer music. Here they stir the ashes a couple of times, with an English-Yiddish cover of Holly Near's "I Ain't Afraid" that comes twice on the disc, and points out the pitfalls of what people do in the name of religion, and also in "Loshn-Koydesh," an unusual tale of a Hebrew lesson with an appropriately seductive melody to match the words. This time around the emphasis is most definitely on songs, rather than instrumentals, and for the most part they keep their fire quite restrained, rarely letting the instrumental work fly into the stratosphere as they have in the past. Originally released on King Records in 1965, HYMNS is a simple, straightforward collection of 12 Christian songs, from the traditional "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again," "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "Old Camp Meetin' Time," "When They Ring Those Golden Bells" and "I'd Rather Have Jesus" to two Lynn originals, "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven" and "Where I Learned to Pray." Lynn's beautiful voice is at its best, and the arrangements are kept traditional, with none of the "countrypolitan" sound that was fashionable in Nashville in the mid-'60s. Framed by simple piano, guitar, fiddles, and upright bass, the four songs on which Lynn is accompanied by a choir sound homespun and comfortable. In this setting, not even Lynn's duet with her young son Ernest Ray Lynn sounds treacly. HYMNS is of interest to all fans of pure country, regardless of religious persuasion.
