Hank Crawford always puts a lot of passion into each note he plays. On this set of blues and soulful ballads, Crawford caresses each melody as usual but the lack of tempo variations and the generally so-so material keep this from being one of his more essential recordings. Guitarist Melvin Sparks has a few fine solos but otherwise the backup band (which includes pianist Dr. John, organist Gloria Coleman and an occasional brass section) sounds pretty anonymous. Although a pleasant enough listen, Hank Crawford has recorded many more significant dates than Groove Master. ~ Scott Yanow

Groove Master
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's ...

$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought ...

| | Pretty Things S.F. Sorrow CD (1968) Digipak
Groove Master
$9.99 Digitally remastered by Mark St. John and Andy Pearce (Masterpiece Mastering).
SF Sorrow was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in England in 1967 and Resurrection is a live recording of a radio broadcast of SF Sorrow in it's entirety at Abbey Road Studios in England in 1998.
One of the great lost classics of the psychedelic rock era, S.F. SORROW was recorded at the same time (and in the same studio with the same engineer) as SGT. PEPPER and PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, and is on par with both. Unfortunately, the commercial fate of the album (and the group) wasn't as rosy as that of its peers, but that doesn't diminish S.F. SORROW'S quality or historical importance. The record marked an important turning point for the Pretty Things, who began as a Stones-ish R&B band, but by this time were ready to take the leap that a sudden personnel change made easier.
The band launched itself whole-heartedly into a more sophisticated style, both musically and lyrically. S.F. SORROW was even more of a concept album than SGT. ...
| | Clay Giberson Mirador CD (2001)
Groove Master
$12.89 West Coast pianist Clay Giberson's initial offering from the Origin label vividly recalls the seminal trio of Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, and Paul Motian by the introspective manner in which it presents the music. Like Evans, Giberson's touch is well modulated, revealing an impressive lyrical demeanor. The nine compositions on the program all come from Giberson's pen. They are delicate, gentle, and, most of all, melodic but still distinctive. Giberson does not run out of ideas before the album is over. This trio of players can be spellbinding as they work their will on each tune. "Have Wings...Will Fly" showcases a strong bond between Giberson and bassist Dave Captein. For more than six minutes they perform as if doing a classical sonata for piano and bass. Captein shows his mastery of the instrument by playing both arco and pizzicato. The complex "Incompatibility" is about as profound ...
