An excellent Brazilian guitarist, Baden Powell has played with his share of American jazz greats (including Herbie Mann and the late Stan Getz). But there's no jazz to be found on Seresta Brasiliera, which was recorded for the Brazilian Caju Music label in 1988 and released in the U.S. on Milestone/Fantasy in 1994. The title Seresta Brasiliera translates to "Brazilian serenade," and an unaccompanied Powell embraces the Brazilian serenade style on personal, introspective versions of Pixinguinha's "Rosa," as well as songs he wrote with his frequent partner, the late Vinicius De Moraes (including "Velho Amigo," "Cancao Do Amor Ausente" and "Serenata Do Adeus"). A melancholy mood defines much of the CD, and Powell's playing is often as beautiful as it is sad and remorseful. Seresta Brasiliera is an album with little optimism and plenty of soul. ~ Alex Henderson

Seresta Brasileira music CDs
$16.45 The story of Roy Cousins and the Royals is, sadly, a fairly common one in Jamaican music. The body of work the group released between the years 1973 and 1979 rightly places them amongst the finest vocal acts of the roots era. Yet the failure of various producers and distributors to support the group, and constant changes in membership, led to their eventual obscurity outside of a relatively small group of reggae collectors. Thankfully, Pressure Sounds has sought to remedy this situation with this enhanced restoration of the group's classic 1977 debut, Pick up the Pieces. Though the Royals toured the usual Jamaican studio circuit, recording for Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid, Joe Gibbs, and others, it wasn't until Cousins began funding and supervising the group's sessions that their music was given the necessary space to develop on record. What followed was a string of stunning, heartfelt releases showcasing the tight harmony singing ...
| | Peter Green Say You Will CD (2003)
Seresta Brasileira songs
$15.65 This is a Limited Editon 2 CD set with exclusive bonus 4 track CD.
Although SAY YOU WILL is Fleetwood Mac's first album without longtime singer/songwriter/keyboardist Christine McVie as a full participant (she appears only as a guest musician), the album nevertheless harks back to the frothy sound of 1982's MIRAGE, if not the '70s L.A. studio-pop glory of RUMOURS. Singer/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham's production still boasts pleasing quirks aplenty ("Red Rover," "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave"), and his trademark acoustic fingerpicking licks underpin many of the tunes in a winning way. Buckingham and Stevie Nicks share the songwriting duties, and their writing and singing styles still mesh as well as they did in their pre-Mac days as Buckingham /Nicks. SAY YOU WILL manages to sound fresh without resorting to anything as embarrassing as grafting hip-hop rhythms or electronica effects onto the group's classic pop tunes, and though it all sounds far from dated, you probably wouldn't blink twice if told this was the lost, unreleased follow-up to MIRAGE.

| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Bonus Tracks; Japan
Seresta Brasileira album
$39.59 Japanese limited edition with DVD (NTSC format/region code 2).
On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end ...
