You couldn't have asked for a more sensitive, intuitive acoustic bassist in the '70s, '80s, and '90s than George Mraz. From Stan Getz and Joe Henderson to Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Jimmy Rowles, and Tommy Flanagan, the Czech bassist has accompanied one heavyweight after another since arriving in the U.S. in 1968. But surprisingly, Mraz didn't record as a leader until 1991. His first two albums, 1991's Catching Up and 1995's My Foolish Heart, were recorded for the Japanese Alfa label, and it wasn't until 1995's Jazz that Mraz finally recorded for an American label as a leader. Much of this excellent hard bop/post-bop CD finds him leading a trio that includes Richie Beirach on acoustic piano and Billy Hart on drums, although the trio becomes a quartet when tenor saxman Rich Perry steps in on Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes" and Mraz's brief "Pepper" (written for baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams). When Beirach shows us his lyrical side on Jimmy Rowles' "The Peacocks," Bill Evans' "Time Remembered," and the standard "Moonlight in Vermont," you can't help but admire Mraz's tremendous sensitivity -- in fact, Mraz enjoys as strong a rapport with Beirach as he did with Flanagan and Peterson. Produced by Todd Barkan, Jazz makes you wish that a U.S. label had recorded Mraz as a leader long before 1995. ~ Alex Henderson

Yusef Lateef Live At Pep's CD  (1964)

Jazz CD music
CD $12.15  4 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
This is one of the finest recorded live dates by Yusef Lateef--saxophonist, flautist, oboist, auxiliary instrumentalist, and all-around musical maverick. Lateef's style draws heavily on traditional bop vocabulary, avant-garde impulses, and various styles of world music (long before that appellation was in vogue). Backed here by a tight, empathetic quartet (trumpet, piano, bass, and drums), Lateef puts his manifold influences and talents on full display. On the opening cut, "Sister Mamie," Lateef plays the shenai (an reed instrument with a keening, drone-like sound) over a surging, minor progression, and the resulting sound is Middle East meets Mississippi Delta. "Twelve Tone Blues" and "Rogi" are rooted in a more traditional jazz idiom, and prove Lateef's core skills for improvisation, swing, and interactive chemistry. But it is the more experimental, expressive originals, particularly ...

Jazz music CDs
CD $21.39  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Though George Harrison's solo albums for most of the 1970s and early '80s were uneven, often slapdash affairs, 1970's ALL THINGS MUST PASS is a brilliant piece of work. Produced by Phil Spector, whose expansive, majestic arrangements and sonic flourishes suit Harrison's songs perfectly, ALL THINGS MUST PASS eclipses everything the other Beatles recorded at the time (excepting John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND). This sprawling double record gives the impression of Harrison being uncorked and pouring forth all of the songs and ideas edged out by Lennon and McCartney during the Beatles years. The title and the melancholic black and white cover photo match the mood of the music, which brims with an armchair wisdom, and the weary, disillusioned air that permeated the early '70s in the counter-cultural wake. Yet the album also boasts an abiding sense of spirituality and tenacious optimism, as on the lullaby-like hit single "My Sweet Lord" and "Isn't It a Pity," a compassionate study of human suffering. "What Is Life" and "Awaiting on You All" continue these themes, but Spector's bright pop polish lends a counterweight, making the record feel light and deeply personal at once. Despite some lengthy, formless jams, as on the 11-minute-plus "Out of the Blue," ALL THINGS MUST PASS stands among the great records of the early '70s. All Things Must Pass has long been one of the more vexing classic albums to make it to CD. It appeared previously in two distinctly ...

Kenny Barron Perfect Set: Live At Bradley's 2 CD  (2005)

Jazz album
CD $14.29  4.7 stars
Bradley's was a legendary New York City jazz club that for 25 years acted as a gathering place for many of the Big Apple's top musicians, a place to hang out. In 1996, the Kenny Barron Trio dug in before the illustrious audience and played at their best. Barron and drummer Ben Riley were members of Sphere, a quartet (with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse and bassist Buster Williams) that initially paid tribute to Thelonious Monk. On this trio set, "The Only One" is based on Monk's "Hackensack," Barron takes Thelonious' "Shuffle Boil" as an unaccompanied piano solo, and the threesome jams on "Well You Needn't." The other two songs, the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is" and Barron's ...

Steve Kuhn Live At Birdland CD  (2007)

Jazz CD music
CD $12.59  3 stars Audio Samples
Steve Kuhn has been recording professionally for close to five decades, most of which time he's operated stealthily, rarely achieving the level of recognition he so richly deserves for contributing his immaculate pianistry to a range of jazz greats who have included John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Ornette Coleman, Art Farmer and others, or for leading his own diverse bands. In the mid-'80s Kuhn worked briefly in a trio setting with bassist extraordinaire Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster, cutting a pair of releases, The Vanguard Date and Life's Magic. Two decades later, that trio reconvened at New York's Birdland, and this exquisite aural document of their performance serves as a reminder that, at close to 70, Kuhn is one of jazz piano's unheralded giants. He is as sharp, imaginative and dexterous as he was during his younger years, and with Carter and Foster he is at home -- the musicians reportedly didn't rehearse for these shows, yet they sound as if they'd been at one another's sides for the past 20 years. At Birdland, the trio revisited four compositions that appeared on the earlier albums: Kuhn's own "Clotilde" and "Two by Two," Carter's "Little Waltz" and the Fats ...

The musicianship of this swing-oriented European quintet is excellent and there are plenty of colorful solos by trombonist Roy Williams, pianist Wolfgang Dalheimer, and particularly Alan Barnes on tenor, alto, and clarinet; Barnes' spot on alto during Horace Silver's "Sister Sadie" is one of the high points. The weak point to the program (all but the closing "Shiny Stockings," which adds Rick Keller on tenor, is from January 17, 1998) is that drummer Pete York takes an excess of vocals. His singing is well-intentioned but his voice is merely average, slowing down the momentum and power of the music. Much better are the band's instrumental renditions of "Big Swing Face," "Isfahan," ...
