When the legendary Sonny Rollins makes a record it is an event in the world of jazz. GLOBAL WARMING, a title that is reflective of Rollins' environmental concerns, is indeed a significant addition to the saxophonist's long career. As one of the elder statesmen of jazz, Rollins is as strong as ever. His firm-yet-caring way with a melody and his strength as an improviser have not dimmed with age.
Rollins' sidemen are also in fine form in support of their formidable leader. Starting off on a contemporary note, "Island Lady" is a funky number that, in the hands of Rollins and his men, never loses touch with it's jazzy foundation. The ballad "Echo-Side Blue" is a delicate piece that Rollins plays with the utmost sensitivity. For fans of the Caribbean groove of the classic "St. Thomas," this album's title track is sure to get your hips swaying. Returning to his hard bop roots, the remaining tracks, "Mother Nature's Blues," Irving Berlin's "Change Partners" and the modal "Clear-Cut Boogie," offer plenty of tasty solos and grooving ensemble work by all.

Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival.
