| | Manny Oquendo Ahora CD Manny Oquendo Discography of CDs
Although Ahora was recorded in 1993, Milestone/Fantasy didn't release this excellent CD until 1999. While Manny Oquendo & Libre's other '90s releases, Mejor que Nunca and On the Move, contain both salsa and Latin jazz, Ahora offers no instrumentals and no outright Latin jazz. However, it does unite Libre with some guest jazz musicians (including trombonist Steve Turre and vibist Joe Locke) and isn't without jazz elements. For this album, Oquendo wrote three songs: "Concierto de Oquendo" (an exuberant, 11-minute descarga or Latin jam), the exuberant "El Son" and the anti-drug commentary, "Drogas Fatal." Equally strong are the songs that Oquendo didn't write, which include "Asia Minor" (a tribute to the great Machito/Mario Bauza team) and Pedro Flores' gorgeous bolero, "Sabor a Mi." A bilingual gem, "Sabor a Mi" finds Libre pianist, Willie Rodriguez, handling the English lyrics while Libre's main singer, Herman Olivera provides the Spanish part. Those who have enjoyed other Oquendo projects will also find Ahora to be quite rewarding. ~ Alex Henderson

Ahora
$12.49 Manny Oquendo y Libre's previous Milestone album, On the Move!, was a crackling live date recorded in San Francisco -- a tough feat to beat -- and the band waited four years before they would try to follow it up. Yet the results are not so much a follow-up as they are a reprise; five of the seven tunes on the present CD were already heard on the live album. Also, according to bassist Andy Gonzales, this studio-bound album consists of remixes and overdubs as ...

$18.49 The brainchild of David Chesky, this album's collective talents rise to the fore early and often. Although "52nd Street" takes a moment or two to find its niche, Randy Brecker's trumpet recalls Miles Davis backed by a Latin or salsa flavor thanks to the conga playing from Giovanni Hidalgo. The fluidity is its crowning glory, as Bob Mintzer joins the fray on bass clarinet, giving it a low yet sophisticated style. The low-key atmosphere only adds to the luster of the opening song, although Brecker's solo two-thirds of ...

Ahora
$9.69 The first English-language album in the long and illustrious career of Panamanian salsa superstar Rubén Blades, Nothing But the Truth is a strong effort that, if less than great, is fascinating on several counts. The novelty of hearing Blades sing in English is certainly a big draw. He's a fine vocalist and he has the luxury of working with three of the English language's most eminent tunesmiths: Lou Reed (on the songs "Hopes on Hold," "Letters to the Vatican," and "The Calm Before the Storm"), Elvis Costello ...

HB ENT/RECORDS LLC, ARTIST BIOLynch Po or Chazz was born in Kingston Jamaica Chazz Chris Grant. At an early age Po’s passion for music surpassed his imagination, with influences like Bob Marley & Run DMC the combination was considered crazy but as he states “that’s what shape and mold me into this music hustle”.Po moved to the states at the age of 14. In high school he performed in every talent event even though considered a quiet kid getting the heard was one of his many missions, “give me the mic and show me the stage and it’s on a popping” he recalled. After graduating high school Po and colleagues started a Jamaican DJ sound that went by the name “Name Brand”. He would DJ in clubs, bars and at birthday parties “where ever the party was I DJ and it wasn’t easy, I’m talking about Jamaican style DJ, one nigga spins the records and the other work the crowd I was that guy on the mic every Thursday Friday Saturday and sometimes on Sundays night”. Grinding was the name of the game for Po, “I made a lot of money doing it”. Po would promote every events, thus giving him the opportunity to go on tour to places like Baltimore Marilyn, Virginia and Delaware state collage. “Touring different states, colleges and playing in front of thousands of college kids lets me know music is what I want to do, it’s my life I live and breath this hustle, I listen to everything not just for the meaning of the song but for the creativity, its art the spoken art”. With that said, this pioneer is pushing full speed ahead, tearing through beats keeping the audience begging for more with the sick flow of his reggae/rap cross over lyrics. “My producing and writing style is very different from what you hear on the radio today because its a little reggae and a little rap mix together that I call the best of both worlds”.
