Here are all of Jelly Roll's classic Gennett piano solos, including the only known alternate take of "New Orleans Joys," presented in the sequence in which they were recorded. The No Noise system used to clean these old 78s up does a decent enough job, considering when these sides were cut and their rarity. Also on tap are four more solo piano sides cut in Chicago in 1924, four band sides with various personnel, topped off with two piano/cornet duets with King Oliver. A large chunk of this man's genius in one very digestible package. ~ Cub Koda

Down Beat (8/92, p.51) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "..Mr. Jelly Lord's keyboard touch is dry, almost professorial, but his ideas are wry, suspenseful, and certainly timeless, having informed everyone ever after.." Musician (4/93, p.90) - "...rumbling, rolling rhythms, cunning breaks and sophisticated harmonies....Joyous..." Myself, I'm taking a trip down a memory lane I've never been on, but wish I had.
Through the transfer onto CD, this disc exhibits the scratching noises of an old record - which is quite endearing actually.
I'm no music critic, but I'm really glad I got this.

Historic recordings, poor sound These are mostly piano solos with a few band tracks. They are very early in Morton's recording career, but the sound is weak and indistinct even for recordings from the early '20s. If you're really into Morton or jazz history this is worth it, otherwise get the Into the Hot album or the JSP box set, both of which cover his classic recordings of the late '20s with excellent sound. Jelly Roll Morton 1923-1924 CD music
$11.49 Recorded between 1985 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Kip Hanrahan.
All songs written by Kip Hanrahan except "Buddy Bolden's Blues" (Jelly Roll Morton) and "Within An Hour, In New Orleans, Charles Knows The Light's In The Room Without Even Opening His Eyes" (Don Pullen).
This 1995 album is made from pieces that didn't make it into other projects by Hanrahan. Much of it was recorded live during the time of his A THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. The opening track is a live recording of Jelly Roll Morton's "Buddy Bolden's Blues." Featuring a quartet of Jack Bruce on vocals, Allen Toussaint on piano, Don Pullen on organ, and Charles Neville on tenor saxophone, it is a marvel from beginning to end (clocking in at over nine minutes). Pullen is in fact a presence throughout this set, playing with fire, but sadly dying just prior to its release after an extended illness. He's heard here in a solo piano setting ("Within an Hour..."), and as Hanrahan himself says, Pullen radiated light as well as music.
