| | Staple Singers Great Day CD Staple Singers Discography of CDs
Recorded in 1962-1964. Originally released on Riverside as three separate titles: HAMMER AND NAILS (3501), THIS LAND (3524), and THIS LITTLE LIGHT (3527). Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkely, California).
This two-album Fantasy reissue is an anthology of the material the Staples recorded for Riverside between 1960 and 1963. For Riverside, the Staples recorded mostly gospel but the shouting was toned down a bit. A few modern-day "message" songs make their way into their repertoire as well, including Bob Dylan's "Masters of War." Not quite as cataclysmic as their Vee-Jay material but still essential. ~ Rob Bowman

This is one you are probably going to have to search out, but this gem is worth all the effort. First, take the stunning voices of the Staple Singers, with the closely blending harmonies that can only come from the years of a family singing together. Put in the crack vibrato guitar of Pops (he was a blues player early on), add in a top-notch rhythm section that play as close as it gets, and throw in the Memphis Horns. Then add some material that was just about custom-tailored for them, mixed and mastered by Steve Cropper, and you have the makings of a fantastic disc. Still, how many times have we seen all the right ingredients and been disappointed? Not this time. The only disappointment might come from the brevity of the disc; you just want it to continue. The power and majesty that these voices carry comes as close to heaven as can be felt here on earth. They are truly performers who give their all. There are few performers who could rival Otis Redding, and to try and do one of his songs while he was still alive was almost considered sacrilege, yet listen to what they do with "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." It is a completely different take, yet it loses absolutely nothing and in fact ...

Eddie & Ernie's discography is quite a diaspora, spanning about a decade, 15 singles, almost as many labels, and some releases under names other than Eddie & Ernie. This CD does an admirable job of pulling together 24 tracks (seven of them previously unissued) from their disperse output, forming a good though not great collection of punchy period soul with good harmonizing. It doesn't matter a great deal, but a few of the cuts weren't billed to Eddie & Ernie: there's a 1963 Eddie & Ernie single, both sides of a 1967 single by Ernie Johnson, one side of a 1967 45 by Eddie Campbell, a 1964 side they did under the name the New Bloods, a previously ...

| | Eric Darius Just Getting Started CD (2006)
Great Day songs
$11.69 Saxophonist Eric Darius offers listeners 11 memorable performances on Just Getting Started. The CD, which is his second major-label release in as many years, tops Night on the Time in production values, guest star performances, and sheer compositional might because of his collaborations with Brian Culbertson, Darren Rahn, Paul Brown, his hit-making labelmate Euge Groove, and the Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Jeff Lorber on several songs. Together their jam session sound and musicality provide fresh funk, breezy vibes, and wicked chops. "Steppin' Up" jump-starts the CD with a highly personal mixture of sax lines that are superbly complemented by the rhythmic phrasings of the instruments. He continues with "Lover's Paradise," on which Darius builds his creativity and beautifully evokes a time, mood, and place. His sound intersects with the superb sonics of his collaborators to bring on shimmering contemporary grooves that are undoubtedly the characteristics of his renewed sound. Part funk, part smooth ...
